Protesting For Racial Injustices Will Not Change Anything

While BLM is sparking change, it is also inciting harsh retaliation.

George Floyd’s unfortunate death at the hand of the police further accelerated the kick-off of protests against racial injustices. These protests blew up and began trending worldwide, with almost everyone banding together to join forces against racism. From May 25th, 2020 until now, if the timeline is followed, many changes have happened due to the protests and the sheer amount of people speaking up.

That being said, change for the worse is also happening. While it is more plausible to focus on the good changes that are happening, caution needs to be taken as the bad changes are happening in abundance as well.

There is an increase in racially charged incidents, more people are unafraid to scream “All Lives Matter” to “Black Lives Matter”, as a protest to our protest. The even scarier “Blue Lives Matter” is one to keep an eye on, as seventeen-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse drove over 2 states, from Illinois to Wisconsin, with an AR-15 rifle where he shot and killed people at a Black Lives Matter protest which was in support for Jacob Blake.

It Will Get Worse Before It Gets Better

Hope. The dictionary definition of “Hope” is “A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen.” With Black Lives Matter, there is this feeling that change is coming, there is hope that this time it will stick. There is hope that this time there will be actual change and life without persecution can be fulfilled.

Though, realistically, the expectation that it will further worsen before it gets better is an unpopular one. Everyone is so focused on the good changes that are happening that they fail to see how strong the opposition is growing. There is rejoice every time a racist gets fired from their job due to their racist comments and actions, but that racist does not suddenly stop being a racist, in fact, they become even worse.

Racists are livid and fed up of hearing about BLM, they are more aggressive in their racist tirades and racially charged attacks. They create fake accounts on social media so that they may further fuel hate and unrest in society by their inflammatory comments, videos, and articles. They sow the seeds of hate into their children and family. But, not all of them are proactive about it.

The covert racists are the ones to be afraid of. They will not be on social media commenting “All Lives Matter”. No, they will be the ones undermining the Black Lives Matter movement from behind the scenes. They will save face with the public and laugh and smile in support yet when no one is looking, they will sabotage the movement as much as possible.

They stoke the flames of the more proactive racists, they confer in secret about what they can do to further sully BLM, stating that BLM is a terrorist group whose focus is to “come out on top.” They dig up information and spin lies and slander as much as they can so that they can reap the benefits in the public’s eye for supporting BLM while in secret, they are slowly but surely building a resistance.

Will Change Ever Happen?

Will the change that everyone is hoping for actually happen? Probably, and probably not. This can go either way. Protesting for change is not going to stop the hate and negativity in one’s heart. That level of change needs to come from the persons themselves. These persons who have unnecessary hate and anger in their hearts for a race of people, based on how much melanin is in their skin, need to step back and re-evaluate and work on themselves.

Change for the better cannot happen by forcing the racists to be silent and to hide themselves away. They will only sit in the dark and let the anger fuel and fester within. Change for the better can only happen when people driven by prejudice, hate, and discrimination allow themselves to change, otherwise they will hide until a time comes for them to slither out of the woodwork to sow seeds of discord in society again.

Kyle Rittenhouse is seventeen. A seventeen-year-old should not think like a seventy-year-old, stuck in old ways and ideals. This means that children today are still being actively taught the same ideals that were being protested generations ago. Children are still being taught to hate and discriminate against other races by their parents and their grandparents.

Realistically, protesting against racial injustices will not change much. Rather, it will allow the perpetrators to be sneaky and gaudy about their actions. They will become more aggressive towards the cause and cover their tracks to avoid prosecution. If this was not a fact, then police brutality and the unnecessary usage of guns against black people would have stopped when the protests started.

Still, there is hope. Hope still remains and lives on in the hearts of the protesters, in the hearts of all the people who want freedom and equality and the simple act of being able to breathe. While change may seem out of reach, keep trying. Keep reaching out. It may not appear right at this very moment but with a lot of time, a lot of patience, a lot of tears, and a little bit of hope, change is on its way.
