Pros and Cons About being Bilingual
We live in a world where it is more than necessary to be able to communicate with people. As a bilingual person i believe it is a big blessing to be able to speak more than one language, it has opened a lot of doors for me but it has its own setbacks as well. So i decided to set up a list of what are pros and cons of being a bilingual person in the U.S.
CONS
- You will always be more fluent on one language than the other — I personally struggle with this one, when. I try to name objects sometimes I only know the name of it in one language, for example; When my friend is having a conversation with my dad (my dad doesn’t speak English) he tends to ask me how to say a certain word in Spanish but i struggle to translate it because i just can’t remember :(
- You are the first person to come to your parent/friend mind when they need to translate something, for example; My parents have various meetings due to their jobs, so guess who they turn their heads to when they start speaking English? You guessed it right! ME.
- Jokes don’t translate the same!!! On one side i have the friends who only speak English and on the other the ones who only speak Spanish, so when they come together for a birthday or celebration it is a total nightmare
- My brain goes crazy — Sometimes you might think you are speaking one language when in reality you are speaking another; This has happened to me a few times while speaking to my friends or even speaking to my family members.
- Our vocabulary is smaller! — According to a study bilingual people tend to have a smaller vocabulary than monolingual, This study pointed out that since in the brain of a bilingual person there are two languages that are constantly active and involve an additional processing cost.
PROS
- Many doors open — When you are bilingual a lot of doors automatically open for yo, especially jobs and also classes, imagine securing a straight A in Spanish class :)
- Its attractive, people find it interesting and some times they will even find you more attractive even tho it wasn't really your choice to have to learn a different language.
- My favorite one — You get to enjoy double the music! I find this like a total advantage, specially when i hear someone say they don’t listen to English/Spanish music because they don’t understand it. You have no idea how much joy the fact that I can vibe to both music types brings to my heart.
- You can be sneaky with it — You can talk about people without them even knowing, but!! you always have to be careful and not underestimate other people because they might understand and things could get dirty.
- Improved cognitive skills — The brain of a bilingual speaker quickly gets used to managing two languages at the same time. This helps to develop skills for functions ranging from inhibition, working memory and switching attention.
With all of this being said, i believe being bilingual is a blessing rather than a curse since it has opened a lot of doors for me, but don’t let it fool you! as you can see it also has some setbacks.
