Proof! The World is Turning
Yes or No?
Look at these pictures.

Look where the shadow of the tree is.
Now look where it is here:

And again here:

Now, you must realize this is the same tree in each picture.
It didn’t move it. I took the picture from the same spot, each picture about three hours apart.
Something moved. It wasn’t the tree or me, so what could it be?
It must have been that the Earth moved. Right? I mean, that’s what I was taught in science class in third grade. And here it is, proof in my backyard.
BUT WAIT:
Someone said that I just proved that the sun moved. I just gave clear evidence that the sun was just dragged across the sky by Helios. He does that every day, with a chariot. I couldn’t see the chariot because it’s not safe to look into the sun.
But that’s not true, is it?
How do I know? Why did my third-grade teacher seem so sure of herself?
Sometimes, the truth is really hard to figure out. It seems to be very clear, like in those pictures, but it isn’t. To understand what is happening, a person has to check into a lot of stuff. Here, someone would have to follow a couple of fixed stars in the night sky to see that their positions changed slightly. Then, if you do all the right calculations, and if you apply Newton’s Laws, and Copernicus’ ideas to Bradley’s observations, have enough evidence that it is the Earth that is turning, and that Helios is out of a job.
The other way is to figure out who you can trust. Do you believe your third-grade teacher or that weird kid who told you he read it in a book somewhere?
Determining what is true can be difficult. Some things never have exact answers, and that makes deciding what to do even more difficult.
But it’s worth the effort to get as close as you can to knowing what is real, what is happening, and why. Decisions made which are based on bad data usually turn out to be bad decisions. Many times really terrible things happen. Or sometimes you just get lucky, but you can’t count on that happening very often.
You probably know that already, from your own experience.
