Pronouns: People Can Refer to Themselves However They’d Like
But can’t they come up with a way to do so that’s consistent with the rules of the English language?
I remember being completely confused when someone referred to my gay friend as “them”…I kept asking “them ?… I am talking about one person”
That was my first introduction to ‘pronouns.’
Later that day, I came up to a multi-sexual group of people and apparently offended one when I said “you guys wanna XYZ?”
I don’t remember what I asked but what I do remember is that I was shocked this person was upset with me for referring to the group as ‘guys.’

You would think I called ‘them’ a nigga or something equally derogatory….I respectfully apologize and explained that “you guys…” is just generally used when informally addressing a mixed-gender group.
And it was an informal plural of the word ‘you’.
I couldn’t believe I was practically teaching an English class to intelligent people at a party.
I kinda have ‘pronoun’ anxiety now because I really don’t want to offend anybody!
Disclaimer:
I married a man who wore dresses and my son was the first to wear a skirt to school!

Neither my husband nor my son is LBGQ or T. They are more of the ‘+’ in the LBGTQ+ although they don’t like the idea of belonging to a community based on sexual preference.
My best friend was a trans woman and FYI: she didn’t have a problem with me addressing the group as “you guys”
I wanna make clear I strongly support the LBGQT+ community!
“their community is allowed to say and do everything, but if we say anything, then they consider it an attack or something personal”- a quote from a slack freind.
This quote alone is a story I’m developing in my drafts. Follow me if you would like to continue this conversation
“People can refer to themselves however they’d like,” I’ve huffed in my head. “But can’t they come up with a way to do so that’s consistent with the rules of the English language? Christopher Lancette from We All Deserve To Feel Gushy Inside
🤣…I’m sorry that quote is funny.
