I Came across an interesting video on productivity. I’ll link the video right below.
Within it basically addresses the misconceptions people have about productivity. When productivity is mentioned to most, most will think about reading their dusty books which have been on their shelf.
However, in a pragmatic sense, productivity is really nothing if it does not have any real-life application.
By real-life application, I meant its relevance in contributing to one’s success.
Let’s say your definition of success is to be rich.
To start off, there are a few things you will probably think of doing:
I would say you are on the right track if you are doing these things with the intent to succeed.
However, some people do things that are meaningless to their success — while proclaiming it as their productive habits.
The rules of the game are simple:
The moment you realize that you have no purpose in doing whatever you are currently doing. Stop doing it. Don’t hesitate to cut those habits out — they are counter-productive.
Motivational content creators are toxic and overrated.
You simply do not need to learn new things for the sake of ensuring that every hour of your life is dedicated to something others deem “productive”.
Just because Dwayne Johnson, aka the Rock, wakes up at 4.30 am every morning to the gym, doesn’t mean you should too — you could catch more sleep and still go to the gym later that day.
Just because David Goggins runs every day non-stop, doesn’t mean you should too — If you perform it incorrectly, you might seriously hurt your ACL or your legs, which will be devastating and a barrier to your life.
At the end of the day, while these habits can be beneficial in some way, they are not worth the extra effort in your journey to success.
A Facebook software engineer could literally skip all these “productive” acts and just commit to his 9–5 job and get paid more than you, who is grinding his ass in the gym, surfing Wikipedia on the evolution of life, and trying to understand quantum mechanics.
Truth hurts. But living in a lie hurts even more.
This is usually the part when I impart some wisdom to you. How you can magically turn your life over with some words I’ve spent an hour writing.
However, there is no secret ingredient or wisdom I can impart to you.
It all comes from within: You.
When it comes to simple arithmatics, I can be here to guide you step by step on how you can overcome your obstacles.
But when it comes to something as big, intricate, and subjective as one’s life’s success, I can’t say the same.
I can, however, ask you some guiding questions to lead you to self-discovery.
Ask yourself these few questions:
- What is my definition of success?
- What should I do to get one percent closer to achieving success?
- What should I not do to make success one percent more attainable?
Life is but a blank piece of paper we give meaning to; Fill it with the scribbles, you will get a messy life. Fill it with proper sentences, you will get a structured and fulfilling life.
From there on, you craft your life accordingly.
