The author shares personal experience, having achieved a dream life only to feel lost without new aspirations. The article advises having multiple dreams to avoid feeling purposeless and highlights the importance of understanding that achieving a dream is not the end of the journey but a part of personal growth. It also distinguishes between dreams and goals, emphasizing that dreams inspire and give a sense of freedom, while goals are practical milestones that drive daily action and effort. The author concludes by encouraging readers to allow themselves to dream big while keeping those dreams separate from their goals to maintain motivation and avoid disillusionment once a dream is realized.

Opinions

  • Dreams are essential for providing a sense of purpose and hope, but the realization of a dream may not yield the anticipated joy or fulfillment.
  • Achieving a dream without having new ones to pursue can lead to a sense of loss and aimlessness.
  • It is crucial to have more than one dream to ensure continuous motivation and a sense of direction in life.
  • Dreams differ from goals; dreams are aspirational and provide mental relief, while goals are actionable and trackable steps toward achieving part of a dream.
  • Life inherently involves trade-offs; focusing on one area of success, such as career or family, often means sacrificing another.
  • The author believes that the true vocation of an individual becomes clear when they stop following others' expectations and start listening to their own desires and making mistakes.
  • The article suggests that mixing dreams with goals can lead to disappointment, as the pursuit of goals never truly ends, whereas dreams can remain a source of inspiration and personal satisfaction.

Probably You’re Not Gonna See Your Dream Realized

But you have to work on it, here’s why

Now that I aroused your curiosity, it’s time to say something incredible: you are going to make your dreams come true, but (’cause there is always a but) you’re not going to enjoy the dream as you would like.

I want to tell you this because is what most of the people fear actually. They fear to see their dreams come true and I’ll tell you why.

Dreams Are Dreams for God’s Sake

When I was 20, I finished school and I promised myself to go living the life of a star, working abroad, making money and party a lot.

One year later, I had just finished my training course as a cabin-crew and I had to move to Tenerife, Canary Islands, where a life of endless partying and fun was awaiting me.

Easy to say, I had what I wanted. My dreams became true because I put myself in the world and acted according to my goals, hoping for at least 30% of the time and surrendering to my destiny for the 70% remaining. And I was lucky enough to know people that helped me reach my dreams.

But what happened next? I had no dreams left, and I had nothing to chase.

Without a purpose, I was damn lost in Paradise

People dream because they want something in their mind to remind them there’s something incredible to achieve. It’s like a safe haven of the mind. Why bother then? They are keeping themselves alive and aren’t hurting anyone.

If you are like those people, you are doing the great job dreams are meant to do: make you dream like a baby.

Exactly! Dreaming is a pure act of freedom and ignorance: it is a beautiful and illusory state where you can find a sort of relief from all the pressure surrounding you.

An advice: be sure to have more than one dream, unless you want to be sad and desperate, asking yourself “and now, what am I going to do?”.

Only Your Sons Will Benefit From Your Work

If you think after you reached the highest peak in your mind, you will be satisfied and can start to live your life in relaxation, be sure you will be the wrongest person you know.

Once you created that business or reach your financial freedom, only your sons will benefit the actual relaxation you wanted in all your life.

They are just two examples, but the list comprehends every imaginable aspect of your life.

So it’s better to think about what is that you wish because you are probably going to have it.

Is it a life of hard work and success? You are sacrificing social interactions and family time while compensating the hole with money.

Is it a life of social interactions and family time? You are sacrificing personal success while compensating that hole with the love of your friends and family.

You see, life is unfair and brutal. It’s always asking you to choose something to add in your life, but it also demands you to sacrifice something you have. You may think having real connections instead of a lot of money is something better, and I agree with you. But I also think that having a lot of money you earned through your hard work is as great as having a lot of connections: the only difference is the focus.

Dreams are not Goals

We focus too much on the story “Who do you want to become when you will be an adult?.

It’s a question teachers made you when you were 6 and naive. How can you think that it was to be your profession?

During those times, your parents are trying to “brainwash” you with all the possible great opportunities this world is offering to lawyers, judges, entrepreneurs, and managers, while you on the other side you are developing without acknowledging it, skills that will determine your real vocation.

You face the real world once you stop listening to your parents and start making dumb mistakes and listen to your crazy mind.

In those moments, your vocation becomes clear, and you understand that within you there’s a lot of potential, but that only one or two of those possible worlds will be the objects of your focus.

Those “dreams” will become goals, ambitions, something you put an effort in it, and that’s why you always defining goals throughout your entire life: you need something to do in the present.

Final Thoughts

I learned the hard way the difference between dreams and goals, and I want you to understand why it is so important to have a dream so impossible you would never try even to think how it’s inside your head.

While goals are “easier” to track, they are for sure what you need in your life, and make no mistake also goals can be great and ambitious. The only difference is that they suck, they never end until you become a skeleton. And that’s a fun fact.

Use your dreams to escape your monotonous routine or simply to remind you you have a so ambitious work to do in this world. The things that are untouchable are a lot way better and personalized than what things actually are.

Give permission to yourself to be a dreamer sometimes, looking outside the window imagining a world where your hard work revolutionized the life of billions of people. You deserve that imaginary boost in your mind.

But remember to NEVER mix those dreams with your goals, because if dreams are not that big, you are going to have a pretty bad time once your deepest wishes are fulfilled.
