Prime Day, the Day
What CNN Underscored editors are hoping to buy on Amazon Prime Day 2022

What do you wish for yourself in this month of July 2022?
- a Braun KF7070 BrewSense Drip Glass Coffeemaker?
- a Goshi Exfoliating Shower Towel?
- or a Nutribullet Pro?
- or perhaps a Stewart Freeze Dried Dog Treats?
- What if a Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray could save the day?
- or a pair of Vivanly Furry Stiletto Heel

Reading this post on the supposedly serious CNN website, I cannot but conclude that we have become a completely degenerated species. Deals here, deals there, savings here, savings there, we run like a cat would that desperately tries to catch a mouse. The mouse is constantly moving from left to right, from the kitchen to the bedroom to the living room and back to the kitchen. The cat is salivating and using its last energy in this game that is supposed to save its life. Fresh meat, waiting in the corner.
The cat forgets that it is well fed, three times per day, has a lovely home and a thick rug to sleep on. All bills are paid. But still it is running, as if running for its life, to get these unnecessary additional calories that will in the end just make it run more slowly and prevent him from ever catching the “beautiful mouse of its dreams”.
I can see it salivating, I can see it driven by its basic instincts that prevent him from thinking straight, thinking rationally. I can see it making a fool of itself just to add another mouse on its tally.
Poor cat, poor human beings. Are we like the cat, running after all these useless, redundant pleasures that make our life so miserable? Do we really think that buying the latest gadget, especially if warmly recommended by CNN, will support us survive until the next day, until the next PRIME hunting seasons?
Of course, we are surrounded by a world that is desperately moving in the wrong direction.
- The war in Ukraine that is putting an immense pressure on the European economies that forgot that they are importing most of their energy from Russia, the friend of yesterday, the enemy of today. They forgot before they decided to put sanctions on Russia and seems surprised that Russia reacts.
- Inflation that is somehow making life more expensive again. Well, nobody was complaining when the price of mostly everything we are buying nowadays was decreasing heavily. Computers, mobile phone, plane tickets, cars, … This is certainly one of the most extraordinary events. Entire generations are slowly learning again that, COVID or no COVID, life is mostly about financing your survival. It is not about buying gadgets, not about buying the last gadgets, not about doing less for more and if possible, from home. It is not about the war for talents or will not stay exceptionally long about the war for talents. It will amazingly fast become the war between talents to find a job that pays a decent salary, and most importantly of all, regularly.
- Street killings. Well, that is mostly an American self-inflicted pain. We have some examples of it in Europe, but they remain rare, why? I do not know, but I do not think that it is only because we do not have weapons at home. Switzerland for example is full of weapons as every man has his gun at home with ammunition. I do think that it is more a cultural phenomenon in a society that values carrying a gun and shooting to defend oneself.
The world going in the wrong direction is most probably the reason we need the PRIME treats. We should perhaps replace these treats with acts that have a longer lasting effect for both our psyche and for the world at large. Not buying useless gadgets produced mostly in the sweet shops of the world would certainly reduce our carbon footprint and free our brains from all this trash.
We could then concentrate more on being than on having. Some still have other issues to fight against, here in Cuba. The stands in this meat market are almost empty. No gadget here.
