Pride is for MY Queer Family! (Drag Queens Included)
A Prism & Pen writing prompt

June is Pride Month. And Pride REALLY is for families.
I got gut-wrenched yesterday watching Republicans and Christian conservatives lose their shit over LGBTQ parents bringing kids to child-friendly drag shows for Pride. In Texas, politicians are even calling for abuse investigations and possibly removing children from homes.
I don’t know why conservatives lose their shit over drag art, not when the same people often love and encourage beauty pageants for women and girls — pageants that reduce women and girls to sex objects and dress them in far more revealing costumes that most drag artists ever sport.
But it’s June! And June is for Pride, and for queer folks everywhere, Pride means family. So let’s put the gut-wrenching aside and write OUR OWN stories.
Pride is for MY Queer Family!
Queer people join families, create families, raise families, celebrate families. Our families are traditional, radical, colorful, ordinary, exceptional, boring, and exciting. Whatever our families look like, Pride is a family affair.
Once, Pride for me in NYC meant delicious deli, cheap wine, and live opera on a blanket in Central Park. My family were my husband Lenny, our lesbian neighbors Harriet and Mary, a sweet young friend of mine named Brad, a swishy/crazy biker-bearded bartender named Howie, a gender-bending grandma/grandpa named Carla or David depending on their mood, and Hilda, an elderly Holocaust survivor who was Carla’s constant companion.
Later in life, my queer family meant my partner and the at-risk child we raised together.
Today, even though I’m single, I STILL have queer family, and they know who they are.
What does YOUR queer family look like? Transgender, bisexual, gay, or otherwise, we queer folks bond and join with one another as much as anyone does, because we’re human and family is what humans do.
Pride is for MY Queer Family!
Our last Prism & Pen writing prompt targeted the split between Pride as Protest and Pride as Party. For the next two weeks, let’s focus on Pride as Family. YOUR FAMILY.
Let’s tell some stories, people.
Time to be out and proud together. Time to roar our queer family values!
Quills out, editorial support available!
If you don’t think of yourself as a writer, don’t let that stop you. P&P editors can work with you to make your writing look sharp and professional. So don’t let lack of experience stop you from sharing your queer family.
You tell your stories, we’ll help you share them.
Please send in your essays, poems, short fiction, memoir, art reviews, or history. If you’re already working on something else, we welcome submissions about anything within our guidelines at any time.
If you’ve not yet written for P&P, here are our submissions guidelines and procedures:
