ELECTIONS 2020
President Donald Trump Has Called For a Postponement of the 2020 General Election
but who would become the 46th President if that happens?
By any chance, if the 2020 general election which is supposed to be held on the 3rd of November gets postponed, who would become the 46th president of the United States is actually gets complicated than most of us could even imagine.
This article is all under the assumption that all elections would be postponed not just the presidential elections.
Firstly, the current president, Donald Trump’s term, and his vice president Mike Pence’s term will come to an end in January 2021.
First of all incumbent president, Donald trump’s term will end on January 21 as will his vice president mike pence’s term. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will be next in the line of succession, but if the election is postponed her term will also end on 21 January 2021.
So next in line will be the U.S. Senate ‘s president pro tempore, usually the senior senator of the controlling party, now Senator Chuck Grassley, the senior republican in the Iowa-controlled democrat party senate since 1980.
But would that mean that Chuck Grassley will become America’s 46th President?
Absolutely no
The reason is if the election gets postponed then the democrats would still hold 35 seats in the senate and the republicans would hold 30, which means the democrats have the majority and they’ll be electing one of their own sitting senators of their will to serve as president pro tempore and thus Patrick Leahy would stand a chance to become the next president as he’s the most senior democrat.
Because again if there is no election held the democrats would hold 35 seats in the senate and the republicans would hold 30 meaning the democrats would have a majority and most likely select one of their own sitting senators to serve as president pro-temp and thus electing the next president of the united states and who exactly is the most senior democrat that would be Patrick Leahy from Vermont.
Hypothetically, if the Democrats go the traditional route then;
The 46th president would be Partick Leahy
I know this is so crazy, And if that winds up happening by any chance, I seriously wonder whether the Democrats will support Patrick Leahy unanimously as the next president.
As a matter of fact, 2020 democratic presidential candidates Kamala Harris, Michael Bennett, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Bernie Sanders will all be eligible as the next president since they are all not up for re-election in 2020.
However, I’d say things would get only uglier if this happens.
