Postcard from Hawaii — December 25, 2021, 4.9 quake today.
Aloha dear friend,
You asked, “What’s a typical day on the Big Island like?” That depends on one of our neighbors. She’s the Hawaiian Goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes. Pele resides 12 miles from our little jungle cabin by the sea.
We get daily briefings on her activities as we live downslope from her main residence near the 14,000-foot summit of Mount Kilauea. She’s always busy.
She’s currently constructing a summer cottage 26 miles offshore. It’s still underwater but growing fast. She’s a mover and a shaker.
She delivered more construction material yesterday, resulting in a 4.9 earthquake. We feel thousands of Pele’s “Hula moments” every month as 2,000-degree magma tunnels up towards the surface.
Gotta run — promise to write soon.
Aloha, James
P.S. This 2018 photo was taken two miles away!
