Summary

The author, currently in Brisbane, is experiencing extreme heat and is eagerly awaiting a forecasted cool change.

Abstract

In a personal postcard from Brisbane dated February 2, 2022, the author describes the unbearable heatwave they are enduring. Despite being in a pool, the author finds little relief from the soaring temperatures, which have turned even the pool water warm. The author reminisces about simpler cooling methods from childhood, such as lying on the floor or running under a sprinkler. The official temperature reads 28°C, feeling like 33°C, but the author's car thermometer indicates an even hotter 35°C in the shade. The local weather bureau promises a cool change on the following day, though the author doubts it will be sufficient, even fantasizing about snow as a respite from the heat.

Opinions

  • The author is skeptical about the accuracy of the official temperature, believing it to be an underestimation.
  • The author expresses a strong personal dislike for the current heatwave conditions, comparing them to living in a sauna.
  • The author has a clear preference for cooler weather, as indicated by the desire for snow, a stark contrast to the current heat.
  • There is a sense of nostalgia for childhood methods of cooling down, suggesting a longing for simpler times or perhaps more effective personal cooling strategies.

Hot! Hot! Hot!

Hi there you lucky people in the Northern Hemisphere,

Here, it’s so hot I almost cannot stand it. I can’t remember ever being quite this hot. I am in my pool trying to cool down, not very successfully. The pool has heated up in these last few really hot days.

It’s like living in a sauna and I don’t do saunas very well for more than five minutes. When I was a kid, I used to get really hot but I would just lay on the floor to cool down or run out under the sprinkler.

The official temperature is 28C, feels like 33C. I call bullshit! My car says 35C in the shade. On the brighter side, the weather bureau says there’s a cool change coming tomorrow. It can’t be cool enough for me. Snow would be nice.
