poetry

portrait of my roof

very very warm and fuzzy

Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash

I’d go there to pray. alone.

great people with souls at the fore are said to have done it this way.

I’d listen to the sound of cats having sex as the day walked in with little bird feet.

how ostentatious! I’d think, going back to communing spring’s airfrost with my skin.

birds commuted from the alleyway rhododendron to the asphalt shingles pressed together like palms. this is where they announced

Maggie climbing her roof, which was the same roof as mine because we lived in row homes.

she’d study physics and we’d talk about her grandfather’s death. but now

everything’s changed as it must. shaved skin cells rising dust. new bean boots. I moved.

and all that’s stayed is the prayer.
