Politics is the Low-Hanging Fruit of Humor
The third rail of journalism
Someone asked me why I don't make political jokes.
I am careful about making any political statements, although I am passionate about politics. That is not my job here.
Political jokes are indeed low-hanging fruit. They take on a totally different appearance on one side of the tree from the other.
From one side of the tree, they block the sun and look shadowy. They can make the observer feel gloomy and depressed at best, and irate or argumentative at worst.
From the other side of the tree, they may catch the sun just right and be attractive and make us happy.
Sometimes after we consume the fruit, we can even get intestinal problems.
If we try to ignore it, we could end up hitting our heads on it.
So I decided not to do political humor. Ever. Doing so puts one in peril of losing half their fans immediately.
But don't worry — you only shoot yourself in one foot.
Thank you for your time.
