Politely I Declined

A knight in shining armour,
Approached me in the morn,
Bade me climb behind him,
On his valiant steed of white,
He promised me a castle,
Golden chains and jewels too,
If only I would ride behind him;
Politely I declined.
A merchant in silken robes,
Approached me at the noon,
Bade me climb behind him,
On his coach of gilded gold,
He promised me a manor,
Fine silks and laces too,
If only I would ride behind him;
Politely I declined.
A magician with flowing cloak,
Approached me at the setting sun,
Bade me climb behind him,
On his dragon of burning fire,
He promised me a tower,
Ageless beauty and power too,
If only I would ride behind him;
Politely I declined.
A commoner in Woollen dress,
Approached me as the moon rose high,
Bade me walk beside him,
In the frosty grass, glowing bright,
He promised me no castle,
No manor, or tower tall,
No riches could he give me,
But, the greatest of them all,
He promised me his heart,
For always and a day,
If only I would walk beside him,
And never fall away.
Cheerfully I accepted,
And together we now walk,
Not one behind the other,
But side, by side,
And equal for all time.
