Summary

The "Lottery of Words" is a reflective piece on the unpredictable journey of written content, accompanied by a writing challenge and personal commentary on the housing market.

Abstract

The website content presents a poem titled "The Lottery of Words," which contemplates the unpredictable nature of how written words can be interpreted and applied in various contexts, potentially far from the author's original intent. This introspection is followed by a #WritingPrompt that invites a list of writers and the broader community to participate in a writing challenge, encouraging them to explore where their words might lead. The challenge is open to various forms of writing, from poetry to essays. Additionally, the author, Lucy Dan, expresses frustration about the current housing market, specifically the high cost of a studio condo with unresolved issues like bed bugs. The page also includes links to other writings and a submission form for a publication called "The Brain is a Noodle."

Opinions

  • The author acknowledges the empowering potential of writing, likening its impact to "sunshine rays from within."
  • There is a concern that words may be twisted and applied to harmful contexts, which worries the author.
  • Lucy Dan expresses anger about the state of the housing market, highlighting the injustice of high rent for substandard living conditions.
  • The inclusion of a writing challenge suggests an optimistic view of writing as a means of community engagement and creative expression.
  • The author values acceptance and its role in life, as indicated by a linked article titled "How important is acceptance to you? How does it show up in your life?"

Anything written can be taken far distances from the writer’s initial intentions:

sometimes a journey so empowering, it bubbles up as sunshine rays from within.

Yet sometimes this idea makes my skin curl (like the thought of bed bugs always itching, never truly gone) that some will twist these words outside their context apply them to hurtful, dangerous realms, as if I, too, aligned with those intentions.

Hi, I’m Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) and I’m still angry that this studio condo that has an unfinished ceiling with registered bed bugs costs $1900 CAD/month and that’s just how the MARKET is right now how is anyone ever supposed to live and that’s the added flavour I wanted to add to the bed bugs reference.
