Greetings PW writers! We have a new monthly challenge for you here at PW. This month we will be trying out one of Cendrine Marrouat’s poetry forms — the Sepigram. In addition to abiding by the rules of her form, you must also adhere to what all the form entails:

Sepigrams must feature positive / uplifting elements. A reference to nature is encouraged. For example: season, weather, month, time of the day, etc. — Cendrine Marrouat

THE RULES

  1. You must be a PW writer and you must submit your piece to PW. If you are not a PW writer, you may ask to be added by going to the Submissions page and commenting there. Do not comment to be added here!
  2. Only one (1) entry per writer.
  3. The poem must follow Cendrine’s rules exactly.
  4. You must have a clearly stated, relatable Title.
  5. Use ‘Response for the Poetry Writing Challenge’ as your Subtitle. Entries without a Subtitle will not qualify for the challenge. Do not expect an editor to remind you or add a subtitle for you.
  6. Use an appropriate image for your story and cite it properly. Editors will not remind you of this.
  7. You must use the following three tags — Poetry, Sepigram, and Writing Challenge. The other two tags are whatever you wish them to be. Entries without those three tags will still get published in PW, but they will not qualify for the challenge. Do not expect an editor to add these tags for you.
  8. Tag Cendrine (@cendrineartist) and me (@ravynehawke) at the end of your poem with a link back to this challenge. Entries that do not include the tags or link will not qualify.
  9. All entries are due by April 30th at 6:00 pm US CDT. Use this converter to make sure your story is in on time.
  10. Winner will be announced on May 7th.

THE CHALLENGE

Write a Sepigram using the form and rules laid out in Cendrine’s post. Be sure to check out her example poems at the end.

You may use any of the prompts available here at PW that meet the themes of a Sepigram, including Rose Malana’s A Natural Thought prompts (found under PROMPTILICIOUSNESS, a new prompt comes out every Tuesday), Christine Graves’s A-Word-A-Day prompts, or choose from the words below (you can use more than one word).

  • April
  • Spring
  • A natural setting — Forest, Mountains, Beach, Desert, etc.
  • A time of day — Sunrise or Dawn, Sunset or Twilight
  • Moonlight
  • Sunshine
  • Rain Showers
  • Lightning and/or Thunder
  • A force of nature — tornado, earthquake or hurricane
  • Daytime wildlife (choose an animal you resonate with)
  • Nocturnal creatures (choose an animal you resonate with)
  • Natural substances — soil, flowers, gardens, trees, etc.
  • Body of water — creek, brook, river, lake or ocean

Remember to weave these natural things with the personal, and include a positive, uplifting message
