Poetry and Short Fiction Writers: Stop Being Shy about Sharing Your Creativity!

Are you insecure when it comes to sharing your fiction on Medium?

I’m a prolific writer who has been writing online for close to two decades. Because of all the different types of writing I’ve done and been paid for, I feel pretty comfortable sharing my thoughts and views, even when it comes to writing various forms of fiction.

Personally, I think creativity can be found in just about everything we do in life. Under the right circumstances, non-fiction writing can be just as creative as fiction.

But in a similar way, a fictional story can contain as much truth and realism as a non-fiction article. This is especially the case in 2021, because the lines have really managed to get blurred, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

New writers on Medium, here’s a creativity tip that you should be sure to remember:

There’s plenty of room in the cyber world for both fiction and non-fiction, and the same is true about the Medium platform.

If you write on Medium, you can share non-fiction articles, personal experiences, and even poetry and short stories.

What type of stories do Medium writers typically publish?

If I had to answer the question: What type of stories do Medium writers typically publish, I would have to answer personal essays.

From what I’ve seen since starting on the site in May 2021, there’s a big diversity of stories and topics that people write on.

While there are also a lot of non-fiction, article type stories that provide informative material, there appears to be more personal experiences than anything, and that includes advice and opinion type stories like the one you’re reading.

Everyday, scores of Medium writers take advantage of the opportunity to write stories on just about everything you can imagine. But only a few (relatively speaking), spend an equal amount of time writing and publishing poetry and short fiction.

Where should you publish poetry and short fiction on Medium?

Where do the writers on Medium who like to write poetry or short fiction publish their creative writing?

Many new members who join the Medium community are surprised when they discover there are publications that publish poems and short fiction stories. All you have to do is search for them on the front page.

Some are devoted exclusively to those who create poems or fiction, and others are simply inclusive of different forms of writing.

And of course, just like everything else that we write and publish on Medium, writers always have the option of publishing their poems and short fiction themselves.

There’s no need to be shy about publishing your poems, free verse, and other creative ramblings. Not everyone who writes on Medium is an experienced writer, and sometimes that comes across when writing non-fiction and other types of writing.

But the best way for you to shine, even if you’re not a professional writer, is when you’re being your authentic creative self, whatever and whoever that is. So dare to take a chance.

Get out of your comfort zone, pull out that shoe box full of old poems and short stories you wrote when you were inspired, and share them with us.

Here is some of my more creative fiction writing that I’ve shared here on Medium, and I also show you where I published it.
