I do the same thing on Medium as I do in real life with collecting books — my shelves are full of novels in my “to be read” list that I’ll eventually get around to. While I do own a Kindle, reading a physical book has no comparison: that slightly musty old-book smell or the fresh aroma of newly printed ink — the heavy weight of the physical book in my hands — the shushing sound as I turn the pages — the satisfaction of flipping to the last chapter and being able to close the book with a satisfied sigh on a story well read.

The only problem is that my reading list here (and piles of novels at home) keeps on growing. Surrounding myself with books is like wearing clothes — I feel naked if I don’t have them around. I’m not a collector of anything else, except now I’ve added Medium articles to the equation. So the question is…

Does anyone else have a Medium addiction? Poem: The Power of Discipline

Grit, Love, and Joy are Great Friends of Discipline

Photo by Brett Jordan on Unsplash

The power of discipline rises each day with grit, love, and joy.

If you like it, do it well. If you don’t feel like it, do it even better.

There are days when you’ll find that life is sweet without sugar. There are days when you’ll find that sobriety is the best way to overcome stress. There are days when you’ll feel powerful and peaceful without excess pleasure.

If you like it, do it with grit. If you don’t feel like it, do it with more grit.

There are days when push-ups make you feel pain. There are days when squats make you sore. There are days when planks make you go blank. But the next day…you wake up as an embodiment of power and value.

If you like it, do it with love. If you don’t feel like it, do it with more love.

Good things are hard. Good things are tough. Good things require effort to happen. Good things require consistency to sustain. Good things aren’t easy to achieve. Therefore, discipline isn’t easy.

Writing isn’t easy. Reading isn’t easy. Exercising isn’t easy. Meditating isn’t easy. Fasting isn’t easy. Eating healthy isn’t easy. Being mindful of your thoughts, words, and actions in every moment isn’t easy.

If you like it, do it with joy. If you don’t feel like it, do it with more joy.

Doing every difficult work with grit, love, and joy is discipline. To train with grit, love, and joy is discipline. To focus with grit, love, and joy is discipline. To self-control with grit, love, and joy is discipline.

Immersing yourself in every difficult moment to strengthen your self-worth is discipline. Diving into every difficult moment of your life with courage and fervent will is discipline. Making an effort to stimulate new growth within you is discipline. Doing all difficult things with grit, love, and joy is discipline. Taking small steps every day with grit, love, and joy is discipline.

Discipline is a loyal brother of the tough. The tough is full of grit, love, and joy. Discipline isn’t to make you a winner one day when you finish your journey. Discipline makes you a winner before you even start your journey. Discipline teaches that there are no real losses but only glorifying lessons that you gain from your will to strive. Discipline is an easy flow when you practice it with grit, love, and joy.

Discipline is the creator of the positive. Discipline is the transformer of negative. Discipline is the power of the assertive. Discipline is the lover of the creative.
