Abstract

The article titled "Please Stop Harassing People Who Wear Face Masks" recounts a recent incident where the author, a mask-wearer out of personal choice and health protocols, was verbally harassed by a passerby. The author, who has a history of enjoying masks due to their love for Halloween and Wiccan practices, explains that they began wearing masks before the pandemic due to illness and continued to do so as a precautionary measure. The incident occurred just before the Alberta Government reinstated a mask mandate, highlighting the irony of the situation. The author also references a physical altercation between an anti-masker and a mask-wearing individual at a Tim Horton's in Vancouver, emphasizing the growing tension between those who follow health protocols and those who oppose them. The incident that I am about to write about actually happened a few weeks ago. And trust me, it wasn’t something that I expected — first a little background about myself.

I Always Love to Wear Masks

I was born in October. Not on Halloween (I wish), but the reason why I mention it is that I love all things Halloween (Except for pumpkins, but that’s another story). It also includes wearing masks.

I love wearing masks because I can change into another person or character or even be mysterious.

As I became a Wiccan (Or pagan if you want to call me that), I learned that the original Halloween was originally a Celtic festival called Samhain (Pronounced: “Sow-wain”). It was all about remembering your ancestors who are coming out from behind the veil to come to celebrate the night with you.

I am digressing here, but you see how I still love to wear masks, even these controversial ones that we all have to put on to stop the spread Covid-19.

The Face Mask

However, I first started to wear a face mask a few years before this pandemic. I had the flu, and I really wanted to go on a ghost tour with some friends. So I decided to wear a face mask because I didn’t want anybody else to get it too. So yes, I stood out like a sore thumb, but I had my reason to wear it.

When the pandemic first hit in 2020, I started to wear a face mask way before the provincial government (I live in Canada) said that it was mandatory to do so.

A Few Weeks Ago…

A few weeks ago, I got off the bus and went home. I was still wearing my mask. I could have taken them off as I walked since I was outside in the sun and nobody else was nearby. Plus, I minded my own business.

Halfway home, I heard a driver in a car passing by yelling, “F**** COVID!”

That shook me out of my meditative walk, but I still ignored him. However, I thought he shouted “F*** Covid.” but I only heard him cry out, “…COVID” as he drove by. I assumed that his first word was the F one.

Anyway, he got me out of the walking meditative trance that I was under. It took me a while to get back into that groove and went home.

But I did feel his comment was directed at me still wearing my mask. He probably thought I was stupid for wearing one then because no one else was, but he was wrong and getting the last laugh.

This incident happened the day before the Alberta Government put out another mask mandate for this fourth pandemic wave for all indoor activities. I bet you that this guy is shocked now that he has to put it back on once again.

I am Not the Only Person.

I then searched online and found out that a fight was between an Anti-masker and a guy following Covid Protocol at a Tim Horton’s in Vancouver, B.C., a few days prior. It became physical, and the guy who has his mask on said in the article that he just wanted to get his breakfast.

The Lesson Here.

What I am going to say goes both ways. If you don’t like your government or health officials telling you what to do, then don’t harass people who wear masks and follow the health protocols.

In Conclusion

For me, after this pandemic is over, I am still going to wear these face masks. But only when it is extremely windy, every winter (They are better than those clunky scarves), and when there is smoke in the air (I have asthma).
