Please Don't Do That in a Gas Leakage Emergency.
How to save yourself and your loved ones
Whenever there’s a gas leakage at home, especially at night, and by some stroke of luck, you awaken to a sense of suffocation, it’s a chilling realization that your living space is filled with lethal carbon dioxide. In such a dangerous situation, it is necessary not to turn on any electrical devices, including exhaust fans and lights.
Last winter was an unfortunate event in our colony. I suddenly remembered about it as I went to the kitchen to make tea, and there was no gas.
Because of irregular gas availability schedules, the gas stove in one home was left on all night. The gas supply returned with full pressure around 3 a.m., and there was very little oxygen in a two-bedroom home.
Luckily, the mother was awakened due to suffocation, and she rushed to the kitchen to turn on the exhaust fan so that the quantity of gas accumulated in her home decreased. But as soon as she pressed the button, she heard a horrible fire blast. She survived but got many injuries, but unfortunately, one of the children (daughter) tragically died from lack of oxygen.
Winter is almost here again; therefore, now is the time to be cautious: ensure all gas appliances are turned off properly, pay attention to gas timings and check heaters and stoves. Unforeseen incidents, such as a sudden gas pipe leak, might occur despite our care and efforts. When a gas leak occurs, stay away from the affected area and don’t turn on any lights or exhaust fans.
Instead of turning on the exhaust fan, windows should be opened. Mobile phones and torches should also be avoided. Stay calm, take deep breaths, and don’t panic. To get good ventilation, family members should be taken to an open area; if not possible, move upstairs.
The carbon concentration will drop in 20 to 30 minutes. After that, carefully make your way back inside to turn off the stove or dial 911. Remember and share that gas can explode when electricity is present.
