Clap on Medium

Since I kicked my productivity on Medium, I didn’t anticipate good things coming with problems. Right now my problem is,
People who click on my article, clap, and leave in less than 30 seconds.
I sincerely do not understand the logic behind this action.
I don’t think an AI is capable of having a medium page, and clapping on peoples articles and leaving in less than 30 seconds.
I tried to think of reasons it can’t be.
- It can’t be because my articles are less than 30 seconds long
- It can’t be because you could’ve understood my article and agreed with it in less than 30 seconds to clap and go.
- It can’t be because I’ve ever visited your page, and did the same thing to your articles
I saw my notifications today of all the profiles that consecutively clapped on more than 5 of my articles simultaneously and that was it, then I saw my views stats go up further from my reads.
At first my thought was,
How do you have time to read 5 of my articles at the same time and clap, when each article takes 3–5 minutes to read?
I was so confused I googled,
Why do people clap, and leave in less than 30 seconds on medium?
This was the article that popped up for me, and I’m so glad it did.
Susie Kearley has a great proposal that would help the Medium community and its earnings.
I still hold my belief of writing because I love too, and I do want to eventually make a viable income someday with it. But also with my earnings
I take it to be disrespectful to my content, and the content of others to clap and run.
If you know that this action deliberately hurts the earning of the writer, and their is nothing you gained from the article,
- no resources,
- no experience,
- no understanding,
What was the point other than the intention to hurt the writer? I am not just saying financially.
I’m explicitly saying it hurts me and others mentally and emotionally.
My time on Medium is spent with the intention to help, connect, promote, share, and develop my skills with others while we get to know each other.
I continue to make great friends on this platform and I can honestly say I would never do this to anyone's work. As a friend of Medium I think I am blessed with a great opportunity to help others and then some.
Susie Kearley and I went on to discuss our frustration, and speak of how to deal with this.
I’m not sure why medium hasn’t thought of this already, but I would hope in the bigger picture to protect the Medium community and their content,
They someday implement this feature.
