Playing With My Food

A free verse poem

Self-portrait provided by the author

Today Before the Zoom meeting I ate my gluten-free Cheerios With my fat-free Lactaid milk Because I’m a middle-aged woman Watching my cholesterol And eliminating things from my diet.

But at the bottom of my bowl I saw what looked like a smile. So I quickly grabbed two more Cheerios And made a happy face Because I’m neither too old Nor too responsible To stop Playing with my food.
