Summary

The article "Playing the 40 Things I Love Game" by Jim Fritzen on Medium discusses the author's unique approach to a viral challenge by categorizing his 40 favorite things according to the five senses.

Abstract

Jim Fritzen has been tagged in a popular Medium challenge called the "40 things I love game." Instead of simply listing his favorite things, he has chosen to organize them according to the senses of sound, smell, taste, touch, and sight. This creative twist allows him to share a diverse range of experiences and preferences, from the natural sounds of birdsong and water to the distinct flavors of New Mexico green chile and saffron pudding. Fritzen's selections are personal and evocative, reflecting a deep appreciation for the sensory richness of the world. He concludes by tagging three other Medium users to participate in the game and invites readers to explore his poetry collection.

Playing the 40 Things I Love Game

With a teeny twist

Jim Fritzen tagged me in the “40 things I love game” that is spreading across Medium like a wildfire. I thought, Okay, I’ll do it but I’ve got to find a way of doing it slightly differently than anyone else. That is my tendency — always has been. So I decided to categorize my 40 things into the five senses of sound, smell, taste, touch, and sight. Hopefully no one has done that already.

Sound

  1. Birdsong
  2. Small children playing on a playground out of doors
  3. The distant sound of lawnmowers
  4. Small airplanes flying overhead
  5. The sound of Ewan McGregor talking
  6. Saxophones
  7. The sound of water (babbling brooks, waterfalls, ocean surf, etc.)
  8. The sound of flapping angel wings

Smell

  1. The smell of roasting New Mexico green chile
  2. Cedar smoke (and cedar wood)
  3. Sweetgrass smoke
  4. Desert sage smoke
  5. Pinon sap
  6. The smell of a pizza parlor
  7. Freshly mowed grass
  8. Horse manure

Taste

  1. New Mexico green chile
  2. Egg yokes
  3. Marzipan
  4. Saffron pudding with rose petal juice
  5. Onions (raw, sauteed, boiled, roasted, and every other way possible)
  6. Desert peaches (I swear they have more flavor than any other peach)
  7. Chocolate
  8. Lips and earlobes

Touch

  1. My face on a cool soft pillow
  2. Beach sand between my naked toes
  3. Rocks and boulders
  4. The trunk of a tree
  5. The soft fur of an animal
  6. A hot shower
  7. Cheeks
  8. Dirt

Sight

  1. Sunrise
  2. Sunset
  3. Mountains — especially the Organ Mountains, the Sangre de Christos, Atalaya Mountain, Simmons Peak, Mt. Rainier, and the Alps
  4. Beaches (prefer west coast to east coast)
  5. Flowers — especially flowering cacti
  6. The Santa Fe Plaza
  7. The night sky
  8. The faces of babies and small children

I guess I’m supposed to tag other people now. How about Christiana White , Mike Essig and Ruthann Roy ? Please don’t be mad at me for tagging you.
