Playing Hide and Seek With the Moon
Free verse poetry

It happens in the late afternoon, between the hours where the dusk and the dawn meet up and decide to have a relay race in the sky, pushing clouds out of their way, watching the pretty colors cascade across the celestial landscape and they’re running until the sun goes indoors, leaving its light on the floor, making room for the moon hung around awhile longer, seeking stars to come out of their hiding places.
Spring is coming.
In New York, the days are already a little bit longer and the nights are thankfully getting shorter. One thing I really love about this phenomenon is the fact that it’s getting dark around 5:30 now; making the timeframe between 4:30 pm-6 pm sacred.
There’s something about the late afternoon that brings a silence and with it, a peacefulness. Not to mention, even though the sun is going down it won’t be gone for very long. My excitement for an approaching dawn makes my appreciation of dusk safer at this time of the year.
As the sun falls down, I like to pretend it’s playing a game of tag in the sky. Better yet, a relay race between time frames to see who will make it to the finish line faster. The light or the dark. The colors compete even though we know the dark will settle into the atmosphere. But dawn will follow, all we’ve gotta do is pull through the night.
And we will.
