Summary

The article discusses the manipulative tactics used by some Medium users to inflate their follower count through follow-unfollow and follow-for-follow schemes, despite Medium's efforts to discourage such behavior.

Abstract

The author of the article addresses the issue of deceptive practices on Medium, where users engage in 'follow-unfollow' and 'follow-for-follow' games to artificially boost their popularity. These players, referred to as 'authentic, quality users', are criticized for their inauthentic engagement strategies. The 'follow-unfollow' tactic involves following a large number of users with the hope that a fraction will reciprocate, followed by an unfollow, which is then repeated. The 'follow-for-follow' approach ensures mutual following but results in a lack of genuine engagement with content. The article emphasizes that Medium is monitoring these activities and has taken steps to reflect accurate unfollow actions. The author warns users against participating in these games, as they risk being banned from the platform.

Opinions

  • The author expresses a clear disdain for the follow-unfollow and follow-for-follow games, viewing them as disingenuous and harmful to the Medium community.
  • There is a sense of frustration towards users who manipulate the system for personal gain at the expense of genuine interaction and content value.
  • The article suggests that Medium's leadership, including Ev Williams, is aware of these issues and has taken measures to curb such behaviors, implying a commitment to maintaining the platform's integrity.
  • The author seems to be uncertain about which type of player is more detrimental but is sure that Medium is observing these behaviors.
  • A recommendation is made for new writers to explore alternative methods for gaining followers, such as contributing to Medium publications, to grow their audience organically and ethically.

Players, I Hate The Follow-Unfollow Game

Don’t act stupid and get banned.

Today, I want to shed light on the real players on Medium.

They are authentic, quality users’ BUT they are playing tricks on us.

There are two types of players:

Type 1 — They play the common follow-unfollow game:

Follow 100 people and maybe 30 will follow you back.

Then unfollow them. Keep repeating until you reach your desired number of followers.

Type 2 — They invite you to play the follow-for-follow game:

When you follow them, they follow you back. When they follow you back, they grow your following but don’t engage with any of your content.

I don’t know which type is worse.

But I know one thing for sure: Medium is watching you guys!

A few months back, Ev Williams has announced to

(a)ccurately reflect(ing) your unfollow actions.

Don’t act stupid and get banned.
