A Systemic Examination Revisited
In my earlier exploration, “Astrology: A Systemic Examination,” I wrote about the solar-based roots of astrology, emphasizing the crucial role of Earth’s axial tilt in shaping the zodiac’s seasons. Moving forward in this discussion, the focus shifts from the terrestrial to the celestial, examining how the zodiac signs intertwine with the distinctive energies of the planets in our solar system.
This present article returns to the nature of the zodiac. To appreciate the subtleties of each sign we must look beyond the Earth’s tilt to the nature of the planets themselves.
In exploring the zodiac, it becomes evident that each sign is not only a reflection of Earth’s celestial dance but also deeply intertwined with the characteristics and energies of specific planets in our solar system. Just as the Earth’s tilt gives rise to the seasons, infusing each zodiac sign with its unique seasonal essence, the planets add another layer of complexity and depth to these signs.
Planetary Rulerships in Astrology
The concept of planetary rulerships in astrology offers a fascinating lens through which we can understand the diverse personalities and themes associated with each zodiac sign. These rulerships are not random; they are deeply symbolic, reflecting the ancient astrologers’ understanding of the planets’ visible behaviors and mythological archetypes.
The Significance of the Sun and Moon
We begin with the first two months of summer. Summer begins at the same time as the sign of Cancer, with the Summer Solstice which occurs on June 22nd. Cancer is followed by Leo on July 23rd.
Leo is ruled by the Sun, while Cancer is ruled by the Moon. These two heavenly bodies are the most significant for life on Earth and the most obvious. To the naked eye, they both appear as disks and seem to be identical in size.
In astrology, the Sun and the Moon are considered planets, because in ancient Greek, ‘planet’ meant wanderer and the Sun and the Moon appear to wander across the heavens in the same manner as what we consider planets.
Each planet corresponds to a specific type of consciousness in humans and other living organisms. I am going to present my understanding of these levels of consciousness as I understand them, which may not agree with everything that you have been taught.
Let’s start with the Sun. The Sun corresponds to what Freud called “libido”. Libido refers to the psychic or emotional energy associated with the instincts and desires related to sex and pleasure. Freud believed that libido is a fundamental driving force in human behavior, motivating individuals to seek pleasure and gratification.
The Sun: A Spotlight of Attention
I consider it to be more a question of where someone focuses their attention. Suppose several people attend a party. One person immediately checks out all attractive members of the opposite sex. Another is already busy networking with potential new business contacts. Someone else is exploring the various snacks on offer, while another is studying the bookshelves for interesting titles.
The Sun is like a spotlight of attention, focusing conscious awareness of that which the person finds interesting.
The Moon: A Receptive Canvas
The Moon operates more subtly, almost like a receptive canvas absorbing the environment’s myriad impressions. It’s less about focused attention and more about an intuitive, holistic sensing of one’s surroundings. In astrology, the Moon is often associated with our inner world, emotions, and subconscious.
While the Sun’s placement in a horoscope might indicate where our conscious interests and energies are directed, the Moon reflects our instinctual reactions, emotional needs, and underlying feelings. It’s the undercurrent of our psyche, influencing how we process and internalize our experiences.
Returning to that party, while one’s Sun sign might dictate the focus on socializing, networking, or exploring interests, their Moon sign subtly shapes how they feel in that setting — whether they are comfortable, anxious, nostalgic, or exhilarated. The Moon governs the internal, often unnoticed, emotional landscape that plays a crucial background role in our interactions and perceptions.
This distinction between the Sun and Moon in astrology highlights the complexity of human consciousness. The Sun represents the more overt, conscious aspects of our psyche, while the Moon delves into the deeper, often unseen emotional and instinctual layers.
The Sun rules Leo and the Moon rules Cancer. These are the first two signs of summer ruled by the two most significant heavenly bodies. They correspond to the conscious and the subconscious selves.
Exploring Mercury’s Dual Influence
Next, we look at Virgo, the sign of late summer, and Gemini the sign of late spring. These signs bracket Cancer and Leo. Both signs are ruled by Mercury.
Mercury represents the intellect. Gemini is the intellect turned outwards to learn communicate and explore, while Virgo is the intellect turned inwards, putting the knowledge that was gained during Gemini towards preparation for the approaching winter.
Gemini (Late Spring):
Gemini expresses Mercury’s attributes of communication, intellect, and adaptability. This air sign, marking the lively transition from spring to summer, embodies the dynamic, sociable, and versatile qualities of Mercury. Gemini’s mercurial influence is about exploring ideas, engaging in diverse conversations, and a playful curiosity. It’s about the external dissemination of information and interaction with the environment, reflecting a more extroverted aspect of Mercury.
Virgo (Late Summer):
In Virgo, Mercury’s influence is manifested through precision, analysis, and a focus on practical details. Virgo represents the process of harvesting and organizing, mirroring the end of summer when preparation for the coming colder months begins. Here, Mercury enhances a meticulous and service-oriented mindset. This sign’s connection with Mercury emphasizes critical thinking, practical problem-solving, and a grounded approach to communication. Venus, the planet of love, beauty, and harmony, manifests its energy distinctly in Taurus and Libra. These two signs can be metaphorically likened to two types of romantic relationships: the stable, committed partner (Taurus) and the passionate, idealistic lover (Libra).

This is a period of facing shadows, undergoing transformation, and preparing for renewal. Scorpio, occurring in mid-autumn, marks the beginning of this descent. It is a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual realms is thin, inviting deeper spiritual exploration and introspection.
Aries (Early Spring)
Aries, marking the start of spring, symbolizes the breaking forth from the underworld’s depths into the light of life. This is akin to the mythological tales where heroes emerge triumphant from the underworld, reborn and renewed.

Jupiter, in astrology, is often regarded as the planet of abundance, expansion, and fortune. Its influence is seen in various aspects of life, ranging from wealth and power to spirituality and wisdom. This expansive energy is displayed in the zodiac signs it rules.
Sagittarius: Abundance of Wealth and Power
Sagittarius (Late Fall)
Sagittarius, occurring at the transition from fall to winter, can be seen as a representation of those who possess abundance in terms of wealth, power, or influence. This is reflected in the societal tendency towards gathering resources and consolidating power in preparation for the winter months. Sagittarius embodies the energy of those who aim high, seek to expand their horizons, and often find themselves in positions of influence and authority.
Pisces: The Vastness of the Common People

In contrast, Pisces, marking the end of winter and the onset of spring, symbolizes the vast, often unseen masses — the common people, including those who may be less privileged or facing challenges.

Saturn, known for its discipline, structure, and lessons learned through endurance, influences two zodiac signs, each embodying a distinct aspect of its energy: Capricorn and Aquarius.
Capricorn (Early Winter)
Common Sense and Pragmatism
In Capricorn, Saturn’s energy is manifested as practical wisdom and a disciplined approach to achieving goals. Aquarius, also ruled by Saturn, presents a contrasting image. It embodies the archetype of the ‘old genius,’ akin to figures like Albert Einstein, Buckminster Fuller, or the mythical Merlin. This metaphor captures Aquarius’s innovative, forward-thinking, and visionary qualities. The ‘old genius’ represents a mind that is both wise and progressive, using Saturn’s discipline to challenge the status quo and bring about meaningful change.
