PLAGIARISM | FAKE | DIGITAL LIFE

Plagiarists, Trolling, Hate, etc.

A weekly update on frauds, fakes, cowards.

Photo by Brad Helmink on Unsplash

Have you been attacked online? Not in a nice hacking kind of way, but malicious trolling kind of way. It’s not a pleasant feeling or a situation to be in. It would be weird on another level, if somebody would describe it as pleasant.

The more you spend time interacting online, the more you have a chance to experience it. I still remember my first time, we all do. The upside, yes there is an upside, you’ll get used to it and you’ll grow a thick skin.

You can almost see them coming, you are even starting to expect them. You also grow understanding, that there is something fundamentally wrong going on the other side of that wall of online.

A hurt person, abused even, physically or mentally, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that they haven’t figured it out for themselves. It’s sad. I wish they would though. I hope they will. I wish them love and kindness for their journeys.

“Empathy isn’t an endorsement.” — Dylan Marron

Everytime I’m involved in any kind of trolling, bullying, hate, I remember this TED Talk:

All this above is a tribute to the efforts, sufferings, keeping it calm and keeping it going through the difficult times when our Illumination Community went through an attack from a hurt person.

We are still here, we are recovering, and we are only growing stronger through these hardships life throws at us.

“It is only in our darkest hours that we may discover the true strength of the brilliant light within ourselves that can never, ever, be dimmed.” — Doe Zantamata

Never, ever, Dr Mehmet. Never, ever.

List of plagiarists, Week 35

Plagiarists accounts. Author’s screenshot.

This list of 9 was waiting for me on the morning of 18th of August, take a notice, they are in a row, all of them fake accounts.

It took me a while to figure out what do these fake accounts are here for. I was between money or elections. I didn’t consider fame, because who would hide if it’s for fame. Maybe they came for a secret fame?

Anyway, Linda’s article below helped me figure it out. Thank you Linda.

It was money.

And it’s not even “for sure” money, it’s a “maybe” money. Maybe they will be curated, but considering their usual lack of formatting, not very likely.

What a waste of human potential. Instead of reading, learning and then writing yourself from all the gathered experience, through a unique viewpoint of your own, you copy and paste. For a maybe.

“We sacrifice our potential because we do not know that we are pure potential.” — Vironika Tugaleva

Week 35 in numbers and names

My weekly stats for fake followers, and just to make sure that I don’t hurt anyone’s feelings who followed me on Week 35, I’ll tag them:

Monday: Lazaros Gallos, Mary Staehle, Keith Hohn, @johnsnyderxy— Under Investigation (UI)

Tuesday: @susannoreuilxy — UI, Rajrupa Sarkar, @reneeovertonxy — UI, @marksiddallxy — UI, Kathleen Gehoskii, @jeffdemarsxy — UI, @garybensonxy — UI, Dongwon Lee, @coreydunnxy — UI, @charlesjohnsonxy — UI, @audreypopexy — UI

Wednesday: Andy Yun, Herbet Jaeger, Lihua Wang

Thursday: Pam Carpenter, Liza Holeski, Kumer Das, Jun Jiao, Danielle Tullman

Friday: @alanwilsonxy — UI

Saturday: Thomas Jordan, Risa Hartman

Sunday: zero followers, I guess the plagiarist took a day off.

Total of 26 fake followers. From me, I wonder about other millions of accounts out there, what is their weekly score.

It seems that the platform has made improvements on catching the usernames that are ending with “xy”. Should that be true, the next up are the usernames with numbers at the end, which is probably a bit more difficult assignment for the IT-department, but not impossible.

The hardest part will be to catch the usual usernames, that there isn’t any pattern occuring in their username, like Risa. But their account activity pattern will give them away anyway. In their first days they all follow the maximum number of accounts allowed in 24hours, which is 150.

Wrapping it up

So there you have it, a tribute to our everlasting and growing Illumination community and a bunch of “maybe I get curated” accounts.

Once again, I call other readers and writers on this platform to be aware of your followers, to be aware of the activities around you.

Here’s how to spot these accounts:

  1. Plagiarists follow you without any other action (no claps, no mention).
  2. They only have a Profile and sometimes Claps.
  3. The recent born accounts have followed 151, 301, 451 accounts.
  4. They have a weird or poorly written description of themselves.
  5. Their username has a number (usually 1, 2, 5 or 6) or “xy” at the end.
  6. A lot of their story headlines are written in all capital letters and their stories’ formatting is off.
  7. They have never replied to their readers’ comments.
