Young woman on train

talking about thieves

scamming

how she no longer trusts anyone

I remember a woman at an ATM

who’d stood behind me

Ordinarily I’d move away quickly

but a small voice said don’t move until the money is in your wallet

and after so doing so I went to move sideways

but she’d moved…

was blocking my way

asked the whereabouts of a particular ATM and after listening to my answer said:

Are you sure the money you got from the ATM is yours?

I automatically wondered — because she sounded normal

but quickly realised it definitely was my money and left to later report her to security

the ex (narcissist) once said: I can’t even afford my porn memberships anymore…

a few days later when confronted he said: you must be mistaken…I was talking about my internet accounts

Like the potential ATM thief he was believable enough for doubt and unused to gas lighting I let it go…

it took three weeks to remember the rest of the conversation

When I recited it he never answered just persisted in denying dismissively

the thing about a thief is that there is always a hook

sometimes or associated with a lie told in a particular tone of normality it sounds believable

Like others I tend to beleive in sincerity until the lies mount up,

because I know a liar won’t change…..yet often the story changes…

He/she can never own truth because honesty takes courage.

I’d be grateful for some support: https://ko-fi.com/avigailhalberg
