WRITER BIO

Pilot Turned Travel Blogger Turned Freelance Content Writer

My Illumination-Curated Introduction

Image: Author at Raouché Rocks, Beirut

My writing journey started over thirty years ago. Sitting in my dorm room at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus, reading John Irving’s A Prayer for Owen Meany, I decided on a dual career: commercial pilot & author.

That was a long time ago.

These days life has me on a different path. One of self-discovery and healing. And while I sometimes think about those decades past when I was young, so naive, my mindset is that of zero regrets.

Besides, what difference would it make? We can’t turn back the clock.

The Road

Mine is a story of evolution. Decades ago I used to think I was a failure for not becoming an airline pilot. And though I’ve got a few hours (real & simulator) of single-engine flight time under my belt, I chose a career in banking.

After 15 plus years in the corporate sector, I decided to leave. On 26 December 2019, saying au revoir to my former life, I headed to a tango event in Lviv, Ukraine.

At that point, I’d already visited over 30 countries, but the plunge to start my travel blog was slow. I was scared and concerned about the transition — financially, I was less than ready.

Summer of 2020 saw the birth of my site. Being ad-averse, I didn’t monetize it. A few months earlier I had decided to leave NYC and head south, to Charlotte, NC. Working on my travel blog and figuring out my next move, I re-visited work I had done back in 2013 — as a French and Spanish Medical Interpreter.

Though the pay was less than my former banking career, it was much more satisfying on many levels: personally, emotionally, social-consciously. But when the global pandemic hit, the agency I registered with required vaccination, even for over-the-phone interpreting.

I needed Plan B.

The Vision

Remembering that I wanted to write got me thinking of doing so differently. I would become no John Irving, no Orhan Pamuk. But what did it matter if I opted out of novels? My globe-trekking held a plethora of experiences to share. Unfortunately, so did my childhood trauma.

The entirety of my life is a wealth of material to draw from.

Topics I’ve written about:

  • Healing from divorce
  • Yoga & Meditation
  • Dysfunctional family relationships
  • Self-love & Childhood trauma
  • Non-conformity & Cultural connections

In January 2021, I took my last international trip: to Tanzania. Being back in Mama Africa would become the impetus for my homecoming, to Borikén. You can check it out here:

The goal is simple: positively impact the lives of my readers and in doing so, build a kinder, more compassionate world.
