Writing Techniques to Get You Out of a Rut

Author’s BioRhythm from Facade.com — The Red Line is Physical. The Green Line is Emotional, and the Blue Line is Intellectual. What have I deduced? Stay home for a week, and don’t sign any contracts.

I had a very productive month until I didn’t. In the last few days, I kept writing things that didn’t get finished and that I lost interest in after having put in a good amount of work.

I think back over my day yesterday and realized all I did was finish binge-watching Longmire on Netflix, which was good. Even the last episode was good. So, that was one thing I did yesterday. But no articles. Nor did I publish anything the day before.

It was like I hit a wall.

Then, I watched one of my favorite guys on YouTube, Robert from the Old Byrd Farm. Normally, he would have been working on his farm and the outlying buildings, along with weeding and tending to his vegetable garden. But the place is 140 years old. It’s falling apart at the seams, and he’s on a tight budget, so he does most of the work himself. Lately, he’s been falling through the floorboards. He says he’s okay, but he does tend to limp a bit. Some friends show up from time to time, but I noticed lately he seemed to be doing more things for friends and neighbors, like clearing pastures and getting ready to fill in sinkholes, instead of working on his farm. He said by explanation the other day (while I was not writing) that he’d gotten burned out and was just doing something different for a while.

So, I was thinking about how I might have gotten burned out with all my writing. What do you think? Could it be possible?

Before I retired, I would show up at my job. Either I knew what I was going to do, or I tried doing it and instead ended up hitting balls in a batting cage all day. Throw me a problem, and POW, I’d hit it out of the park. Throw me another one. I didn’t think. I just did it as fast as I could.

Writing is a little bit like that because every time I walked away from my writing room to watch something on television or read something, I’d get a huge creative spark. I couldn’t get back to my study fast enough and would write as fast as I could. Most times, it all ended up being a halfway decent piece. Sometimes, they just stunk.

So, in the last couple of days, it’s been more stinking than good articles.

I wondered this morning if I’d gotten burned out. Normally, I write every day. Last week, I remember I thought I was done one evening, and whamo I ended up back in front of my computer after 9 pm to start and finish a good piece.

So, I started thinking about it. Since I don’t have a job anymore, I think I need to schedule some regular time off. Also, we haven’t been on vacation since before the Pandemic. Finances have also gotten tighter as time has gone by, so dropping everything for a week and going to Yosemite is pretty much out of the question. I need a way to recharge my batteries.

I was mulling this over today and thought to myself, why don’t I pick a different project to work on?

I’ve got oodles of half-finished courses to do. I’ve got a website I need to get started. I’ve always got books to read. I do have three books I need to finish editing. Plus, tomorrow is my birthday. I should do something for myself, just because it is my birthday.

Oh, wait. You know how we pick out illustrations for our stories after we write them? What about if you find the perfect picture and then build a piece around that? I could go for that. In fact, when I was in the 5th grade, that’s what Mrs. Brown did for us. Every day, before we did anything else, we would gather around a picture she’d cut out of a magazine and pasted on a piece of construction paper. She had a special place at the front of our classroom where she’d hang it. I can’t remember how long we got to write; I think it was probably somewhere between 20 minutes and a half an hour. That’s when she’d go over to the other side of the room where the 3rd graders sat and teach them. I think it must have been a long day for her. But it was also where I became a writer.

So, that settles that. No need for a vacation. Just the same stuff, only in a different order.

Oh, shoot. I went looking for a picture to illustrate this article and realized I should check my biorhythms. That’s what was wrong. Everything is nearly in the toilet or there right now. Go to Facade.com to get your own free reading.
