Pickled Herring on Rye

A New Year’s Tradition

For as long as I can remember — or at least for as long as I have been able to stay awake until midnight — my family has eaten pickled herring on rye bread to ring in the new year. It’s a tradition that came from the Polish side of my family.

In Poland, as well as other countries, it’s supposed to bring you prosperity in the new year, but growing up, we believed that it would bring us good luck. After the strike of midnight, after watching the ball drop on TV while watching Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, we’d all go into the kitchen and prepare some sandwiches.

My brother would begrudgingly eat a bite and call it quits. Meanwhile, my parents and I would eat an entire sandwich. Nothing like eating pickled fish right before bed. While it’s a nice once-a-year kind of thing, it’s not something I would eat on a regular basis.

To this day, I have never missed a year of this tradition, even after moving out of my childhood home. Now that I have a family of my own, I’m continuing the tradition. My wife thinks it’s the grossest thing imaginable, so it’s a tough sell for her. However, I plan on continuing to disappoint her for years to come each time I come home with a jar of the pickled fish.

Do you have any New Year’s traditions? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!
