Photoshoot in the Rain

Why not make the best of it?

Use of a prism to create this blurred effect in the corner

Los Angeles has been experiencing more rain than we usually would get in a single year, and honestly, I’m not mad about it. I actually really love the rain, but I know that is not the case for most people.

I was sitting at home realizing I really wanted to do a photoshoot IN the rain and see what creativity would come out of it. I had never done a shoot like this before, and I knew the style would be a bit out of my comfort zone, but that just made me want to do it more.

So I hopped onto Instagram, posted a story, and prayed someone would reach out, and sure enough, a friend of mine did. The rain was predicted to return in just a few hours, and we would meet at a local park for a photoshoot.

I am so happy with how the shots have turned out, and I am so thankful for my friend Rachael Maye for being a trouper and having fun in the rain right alongside me. It was such a blast getting to work with her, and it was my first creative photoshoot back in a while. We shot for about 2 hours.

It rained more than I anticipated, but it made it all the more fun and challenging. I had to think about angles, how the rain would look in the image, how I possibly wanted to edit this set, and the list goes on, but the biggest thing I thought about was to have fun and enjoy this experience. I think this can sometimes be lost when we are trying so hard to get “the shot.”

Now let’s talk about equipment/what we used: I used my Canon 5D M IV with my 50mm 1.8 Lens An umbrella A plastic bag to cover my camera from the rain A triangle prism Adobe Lightroom A rain jacket over my backpack to keep it dry The different places around the location we went to A car window A vintage book that my model brought along (to keep it dry, we used a grocery bag and only pulled it out when we were shooting under something that blocked out the rain)

Some things to keep in mind when shooting in the rain: 1. Always make sure your model is safe and not freezing. 2. Have hand warmers in case it is a lot colder than expected 3. Be careful since different types of ground can be more slippery when wet 4. Bring an umbrella! It will be more helpful than you think 5. We forgot this one, but if you remember, bring a towel for your model to dry off with 6. The rain is unpredictable, so be flexible and just have fun with it!

7. Be safe! If conditions get worse, you might want to head back in and call it a day 8. Be aware of your surroundings 9. This might be a no-brainer but be prepared to get wet. The rain falling, the puddles, the wet terrain. It’s bound to happen. 10. Keep an eye on your gear. It can be easy to lose track, and it could get damaged by the amount of rain it comes into contact with. 11. One must jump in at least one puddle.
