Abstract

The narrative "Pet Chronicle: I Don’t Wanna Dog" recounts the author's persistent desire to adopt a dog, despite her partner's initial reluctance due to their busy work schedules and living situation. The author, Vivianne Chagas, reminisces about the time she spent in a demanding job that led to her leaving journalism, emphasizing the challenges and growth she experienced. Amidst this personal turmoil, she encounters a puppy in need of a new home, which reignites her longing for a pet. After a series of events, including a vet visit that reveals the puppy's minor health issue, Vivianne manages to convince her fiancé to adopt the dog, transforming their lives in the process.

Opinions

  • The author believes that adopting a dog is possible even for those with demanding jobs and living in flats.
  • The author's fiancé initially opposes the idea of getting a dog, citing a lack of time due to their careers.
  • The doorman expresses skepticism about the author's ability to care for the dog, hinting at a potential lack of support from others.
  • The author views the adoption of the puppy as a significant life event, akin to a "daily adventure," despite the challenges it may bring.
  • The veterinarian's assessment of the puppy's health as "nothing serious" is seen by the author as an additional argument in favor of the adoption.

It takes two to tango

I want a dog. “You are crazy”. I know people who have one even living in a flat. “I do not think it is a good idea”. But. “We do not have time”. Even though I sounded like a spoiled child, I kept insisting. Discussions took place. However, I would do nothing without a compromise. We were adults and engaged. So, it would be a family decision.

We did not even have time. Both in their early twenties, working was an obsession. I had a new job. I abandoned journalism. I traded the profession for money. Furthermore, it was quite an, I would say, interesting experience. A daily adventure. I learnt a lot. I travelled a lot. And I got frustrated a lot.

The adventure is over. In the middle of this hangover, Facebook shows me a puppy. The owner needed to move, and she could not take the small one along. It is time. I called. In the lobby, there was I, the puppy, and the “parents”. While the doorman said, “this will not end up well”, I would wait until my fiancé arrived. Of course, he knew nothing.

Especially on this day, he took a while longer to come home. The parents, impatient to resolve the situation, wanted to leave. Nearby there is a veterinary surgeon. Can I go with it there? Of course, they replied, a little scared. So, I gained some more time and stayed away from my unlucky doorman. “He will not like this, Ms. Vivianne”.

The vet said the dog had mild ear inflammation. “Nothing serious”. Since she also did not examine thoroughly. “Very clever. It will grow almost nothing”. Now I had more arguments. I returned. The garage door opens. “It is now,” said the doorman. “Good afternoon, is everything already settled?”, said my fiancé, picking up the puppy. We said goodbye to the old parents and went home. We had two to tango!
