Personnel Space Ships
Since the 60’s we have been in space. Since then we have been working in space on the ISS with other countries. Hence the rise of the personnel space ship. The EVA suits created a vehicle to withstand the vacuum of space. This 14 layer shell shields its wearers from small steroids, radiation, and temperature changes.
Life Support
The life support system is on the back of the astronaut. The PLSS, personnel life support system, consists of 100% oxygen and is attached to a computer. They use pure oxygen because they have to keep the suit at such a low pressure, 1/3 of sea level. This is because they don’t want to be a balloon. A balloon can’t operate an expensive drill, and it can’t bend its elbows or use its hands.
Equipment
The suit has two cameras. One on the helmet and one on the Display and Control Module. Astronauts have a mirror on their wrist and a pounded gold sun shade that drops over their visor. Ther are two purge valves. One on the helmet, and one on the chest. The purge valve is used to evacuate air to clear your suit of containments. It's similar to when you do it scuba diving.
Display and Control Module
The display and control module has a pressure gauge and a thermostat. This monitors your condition along with the computer to measure pressure, temperature, and levels of oxygen. It also has alarms for things to look out for. It holds volume for your headset and fans to keep you cool.
Jetpack
The jetpack is your last line of defence in order to survive away from the station. You don’t want to have to use this. All EVA astronauts have to be trained and cleared to use the jetpack. It uses 24 thrusters that fire nitrogen. They call it SAFEVAR, simple aid for extravehicular activity recovery.
There are three things that require attention. Your gloves, your boots, and your cable. The cable is the thing that keeps you from floating away forever. It attaches to your utility belt and connects you to the station or whatever your project is. The gloves have a U clamp that makes sure your glove doesn’t have a lot of extra fabric clumped up on the palm. They are also the most susceptible to damage.
The EVA suit has undergone an update with the Artemis missions. By 2024 we are going back to the moon, and eventually Mars.
