Personal Piece: I'm Different

Are you different? Were you made to feel different? What thoughts come to mind when you think of someone that's different? When I think of someone that's different, I think of someone that deviates from the norm. Continue reading on if you're different, or have a loved one that's different while getting to know more about the writer.

Earlier on in life, I was made aware of how differently I think, process, and act based on people’s reactions towards me.

Some people were drawn to me while others were not.

During my freshman year of college, I had a colleague approach me about studying with her and a few other students — She revealed to me how she always wanted to talk to me, but didn’t know how to approach me. At this time, I became more aware of my mannerisms and behaviors. I began to mask more. I’m not fond of masking — Sometimes, it’s necessary.

I still find myself masking to an extent, but when I’m at ease my personality shines so bright!

Later on in life, it took introspection, understanding from others, and thorough research to understand my unique neurotype.

Society isn’t designed for people like me, but benefits greatly from neurodiversity.

More neurodivergents are sharing their unique experiences — There is a need for acceptance!

As a Black neurodivergent woman, I deal with misogyny, racism, etc.

Due to people’s biases, Black girls and Black women often get misdiagnosed, or get diagnosed later on in life with ASD and/or ADHD. It’s still a journey of many hardships for me, but I don’t let it discourage me from living a fulfilled life — I was born to persevere!

Throughout my entire life, I have experienced a great deal of scrutiny and mistreatment because of my neurological differences.

I’m always seeking to understand people on the deepest level — I do experience more people seeking to understand me and it’s greatly appreciated because that wasn’t always the case. Maybe because I wasn’t as forthcoming with expressing my most intimate feelings.

I tend to put people at ease while shining light on their greatness! I find people are often intrigued by the way that I think and they often rely on me to think outside the box. However, some people may become dependent on me when they discover just how giving I can be with my time and energy. Therefore, I’ve learned to express my boundaries with them earlier on while encouraging them to do the same. I’m pretty literal, yet sarcastic. I have never fit neatly in a box and I prefer it this way.

I hope that this personal piece was eye-opening for those of you that don’t know me or only know of me. If you happen to be different, embrace it! If you have a loved one that’s different, support them!
