Personal Development & Leadership

Personal Development Happens To You Whether You Like It Or Not.

So you should probably take control!

Personal development isn’t just a choice — it’s an inescapable reality.

My journey as a seasoned leader with over two decades in military and corporate realms has taught me this.

Every day, with each decision, interaction, and challenge, we are changing, evolving.

This transformation is subtle, often unnoticed, but always there.

So this changes the critical question. It becomes not whether we change, but how we guide this change.

Do we let it drift aimlessly, or do we take the helm and steer it purposefully?

.We evolve daily, shaped by our actions and experiences. Yet, this evolution can drift aimlessly if not guided with purpose. Without active engagement in our personal development, we risk becoming unrecognizable, not just to others but to ourselves.

But what changes are we actually talking about?

What is Personal Development, Really?

Personal development is nutrition for the soul.

Just as the food we eat becomes part of us, shaping our health and well-being, the experiences we absorb and the behaviors we practice shape who we are.

It’s about the conscious engagement and absorption of experiences, knowledge, and skills that contribute to our growth.

Like a diet, if we’re not selective about what we consume, we may end up incorporating elements that don’t serve our well-being or growth.

Every book we read, every interaction we have, and every challenge we face is a morsel of experience that feeds into our personal development.

So if we are influenced by our experiences, we should probably give some thought to what they are.

The Continuous Process of Change

Change is constant, and personal development is its vehicle.

It’s not a series of abrupt shifts but a continuous flow.

Our daily interactions, the decisions we make, and the way we handle challenges all contribute to this ceaseless journey.

As leaders and individuals, we must recognise that our personal and professional growth doesn’t happen in isolation but as part of this ongoing process of change.

So if the change is happening anyway, and we are generally happy with our life and experiences, what is the problem? Why should we bother?

What Happens if You Don’t Take Control

Neglecting to take control of personal development is like drifting in an ocean without a compass.

Over time, one might develop habits misaligned with their goals, creating a version of themselves that’s far removed from their ideal.

Five years down the line, you might find yourself entrenched in behaviors and mindsets that are counterproductive, having internalized attitudes and beliefs that do not reflect your true aspirations.

This lack of direction not only hampers professional growth but can also lead to personal dissatisfaction and a feeling of being lost.

Influence of External Factors

Our environment, the people we interact with, and the media we consume significantly influence our personal development.

External factors can either propel us forward or pull us back.

They influence every decisions and discussion we have — they form part of what and who we are.

Being selective about the influences we allow into our lives can make a significant difference in our personal development trajectory.

How to Take Control of Your Personal Development

  1. Embrace Continuous Learning: Actively seek out new knowledge and skills.
  2. Cultivate Self-Awareness: Reflect on your strengths and areas for improvement.
  3. Set Clear Goals: Clearly define your personal and professional objectives.
  4. Seek Feedback and Mentorship: Utilize external perspectives for holistic growth.
  5. Reflect and Adjust Regularly: Continuously evaluate and adjust your growth path.

Leading Yourself

Leadership isn’t just for those who command teams; it’s a principle that applies to self-guidance as well.

At its core, leadership is about influence, and the first person you should influence is yourself.

Leading yourself means taking responsibility for your direction, behaviours, and decisions.

It’s about self-motivation, self-discipline, and the ability to self-direct towards your goals.

By mastering self-leadership, you lay the foundation for leading others effectively.

But most importantly, you make sure that you are developing in line with your own vision and goals.

Your development will continue whether you pay attention or not — make sure you’re growing the way you want to.
