Perfectly Imperfect

I’m Never Going to Fix My “Gappy Smile”

“We can fix that gap you know?” say dentists over the last 40 years. “No thanks, apparently they disappear as you grow up?”.

This is my standard reply. I usually attempt to smile with dental instruments in my mouth and a bright light blinding me in the dental surgery. I’m so used to receiving unsolicited advice on how to close the gap in my teeth from dentists and even strangers. They don’t know my secret. I’m a member of the exclusive “Gappy Smile Club.” As a member, you are guaranteed unlimited fortune and good luck.

Medical Reasons and Restoration

There is usually no medical reason to close a gap unless you have a speech or functional problem. There are many restorative treatments you can use: braces or a plate. Many dentists suggest even filing down my teeth and attaching porcelain veneers. Last year, a dentist suggested dental implants or a bridge.

Gappy Smiles and Good Fortune

Plus, a gap in your teeth apparently brings good fortune. Once my contract renewal was based on a visit by a face reader in Korea. He read my face carefully at the end of a job interview to renew my contract. He silently studied my face for almost five minutes. He first announced I had good “kibun.” Kibun links with a good mood and harmonious relationships in Korean culture. Everyone seemed happy in the room, and I signed my contract for another year. Next, there was a further discussion I could not fully understand with simultaneous hand gestures towards my teeth and a lively discussion. The translation was the gap in my teeth would bring me immense fortune throughout my life. How exciting!!! I grew fonder of my gap.

The “Gappy Smile Club”

So why would I close this opportunity? In France, they are called “dents du bonheur” lucky teeth. Gappy smiles are also highly prized in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and the Gambia. Well-known people have gaps in their teeth. The French actresses — Bridget Bardot and Vaness Paradis smile with gaps in their teeth. The “Gappy Smile Club” list continues — Eddie Murphy, Chris Matin, Georgia Jagger, Oliver Stone, Samuel L. Jackson Zac Efron, Lauren Hutton, David Letterman, Elton John, and Sandra Bernhard.

Late last year, I broke off part of my filling. The dentist exclaimed:

“Wow — you have a gap in your teeth! I had a patient yesterday who just paid me to create a gap in her teeth”.

I was astounded, then inquired if they requested a gummy smile too? There must be more people who wish to pay to join the exclusive “Gappy Smile Club.”😀
