There is hope for the world
Yesterday was my oldest granddaughter’s tenth birthday. The last time I was over at her house she gave me a list of what she wanted. It was two pages long.
I could not get everything on the list and there are other relatives who could get some of the stuff. I decided to get her a desk lamp and a few other small items. Instead of one large present I put the desk lamp in a box and then wrapped and put several small items in the box with it.
So we went to her room to try out the desk lamp. The main concern was whether the electric chord would reach the outlet. I didn’t get an extension chord. Luckily it did, although she had to move her desk over by about a foot. It’s a swivel lamp so she can turn it in different directions. With her bed being right next to her desk this worked out perfectly for what my granddaughter called, ‘read time.’
(And I thought it was only Medium that was so focused on read time.)
She explained to me that she had a bed time, a read time and a sleep time. She had to go to bed at 8:30 each evening but she didn’t have to go to sleep until 9:00. The half hour between those times was her ‘read time.’
I learned that my granddaughter spends at least half an hour every day reading!
I was so happy to learn this that I almost cried!
There really is hope for the world!
So it turned out the desk lamp was a perfect gift because she could point it at her desk when she was writing and then swivel it over to her bed when she was reading. Up until now she only had the light on her ceiling.
And yes, she writes! I almost cried again. She showed me the spiral notebook she writes in and let me read it — although she forced me to skip over a few pages that included notes on a certain boy named J. J. I learned that she is fond of listicles. And doodling. I also learned that she only writes on one side of each page. She explained that writing made indentations in the page which ruined the back side for writing.
I used to do that when I was a kid! I welled up again.
The desk lamp wasn’t the only thing that was perfect. Included in the many small wrapped gifts in the box were 3 books and a blank journal! My gifts could not have been more perfect.
I quickly realized that she would have those 3 books read by Christmas. Thus begins her Christmas gift list.
My granddaughter is a reader and a writer! And I’m the happiest grandpa this side of Katmandu!
