People Say the Strangest Things

They say that kids say the darndest things, but adults sometimes say the strangest things to each other.

I know I have a lot of anxiety, and sometimes I walk away from someone wondering why I said what I said. Or I wonder why I said it in that way. Anxiety can cause some stuff to come out of your mouth in ways you never meant to. A lot of times I have to believe it’s anxiety that causes some people to say strange things. But with others, I can honestly say I don’t know what their problem is. Perhaps they enjoy being rude.

Here are a few examples of things said to me that made my jaw drop . . . .

When I was contemplating putting my dog to sleep, someone actually told me if I stopped giving him his heart medication he would die on his own. To which I could only reply that it would be a painful way to go and I would not do such a thing to him.

While I was walking behind a guy I knew from back in high school he said, “You’re doing it, aren’t you?” To which I replied, “Doing what?” He then said, “You’re looking at my butt, aren’t you?” Now that was one of the funniest things I’d heard in a long time!

A boss once said to me, “We don’t care what you want to do here.” That should have been a clue.

Another boss once gave me so much advice on how to raise a child his talk ranged from items about teenage drinking, to just plain knowing how to talk to your kids, then all the way to an uncomfortable discussion about how to talk to your child about puberty. Way too much information!!! Not a proper discussion to have with an employee.

Most recently I was at a wedding. I had two small glasses of wine with my meal at the reception. A family member had the audacity to tell me not to drink too much and not to drink and drive. I haven’t ever received a DUI nor had a history of drinking and driving. I’m a middle aged woman with a ten year old daughter sitting next to me at a wedding reception.

While I was in the middle of my divorce, from my cheating husband, an immediate family member of mine said, “If you are afraid that he’s going to have a disease from all the women he’s slept with, you might as well take him back because the next one you get will be the same and you could catch a disease from the next one.” I suppose some people have no self worth, but that is not how I choose to live my life.

While some strange things that get said can be laughed off, others are downright cruel and meant to hurt or insult you. Wouldn’t the world be a lot better if everyone was a little kinder and if everyone thought before they spoke. Words can sometimes cut like a knife. Some words when spoken can’t be taken back.
