People Ask Me
Why do I want to travel?

It’s a difficult question to answer with a short reply.
I just do.
For 13 years, I worked for 36 weeks a year and had 16 weeks’ holidays — 10 of those were midway through November to the end of January — our summer holidays in Australia. 10 weeks is a long time being a couch potato, so I would get a second job for at least some of those weeks doing manual labour — picking and packing in a warehouse or sorting Christmas mail in a mail centre. Hot, physically exhausting work.

After a few years, I figured out that if I worked really hard during the school term, I could afford to have 10 weeks overseas at Christmas time and my preferred destination was Europe.

Why Europe?
I studied French for 7 years and always wanted a chance to use it, but more than that was the fact that both my exes had never been to Europe — and they still haven’t! So it kinda belongs to me.

My travelling — well my travelling to places I wanted to go to — really began in 2010 when my eldest daughter was living in Nantes, France. She was suffering SAD but we didn’t know about that then. I had the choice of using my frequent flyer points to fly to see her or using them to get her to fly home. Well, which do you think I chose?

That is when my passion for travelling overseas started — specifically my obsession with Europe. I’d been to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the US as well as Pacific Island nations with my (now ex) husband and had no real desire to return.

Trip of a Lifetime with my family
Travelling to Europe turned out to be a slippery slope. Once I had a taste of it, I couldn’t get enough. Eight and a half months later I was off again to see more! I have written a lot about that four-and-a-half-month trip with my family. “The Trip of a Lifetime”. That was from September 2011 to January 2012.

I stayed home in 2013 — I almost died of boredom so I went on a dating site and met a guy who took me to the UK to meet his family in 2014.
Spa-hopping trip
I no sooner arrived back in Australia than I was off again with my youngest daughter for 5 weeks “spa-hopping” around Europe, then 2 weeks on a bus tour in Turkey, then a few weeks doing a road trip around Portugal with my eldest daughter and her boyfriend who spoke Portuguese.

Motorhome trip
Ten months later, I was off on a 10-week holiday in a motorhome travelling Ireland first and then Germany, France, Spain and Portugal before spending a couple of more weeks in England. We arrived back in Australia the day before I had to start work. That was January 2016.

Solo trip to Eastern Europe and Russia, then Iceland, Morocco and Andalucia with my eldest daughter
After a couple of tumultuous years, I again bit the bullet and travelled on my own to Eastern Europe and Russia in September 2019. I wasn’t sure I could do it, but I survived! I had lots of adventures that could only happen to me but that’s another story.
I love to travel — I live to travel. I love learning and when do you learn something amazing every single day? When you travel.
Why is travel so important to me?
I know it sounds trite but travel gives me a purpose in life. I’ve just had both my knees replaced and if I didn’t have the vision of travelling once again, I’m not sure I would have bothered. I would have just hobbled around here for the rest of my miserable existence.

I want to be able to climb those towers and see those views that you Globetrotters insist on putting in your stories. I’ve never been a good armchair traveller — I’m more of an “I want to do it myself!” kinda gal.
Your stories inspire me, especially those of you in your seventies who are still out there seeing the world — you are my heroes.
A writer (sorry I can’t remember who) asked these questions and this is my long-winded reply. Sorry. This is the best I can do. I’ll add a few photos so it’s not so boring. Just a few from my last solo trip — Bratislava, Budapest, Prague, Tallinn, St Petersburg, Moscow, Kent and Wales before I met my daughter in London and travelled to Iceland, Morocco and Spain together for 2 months.
