People Are Great-We Need Each Other
People can exert such a positive influence on us-A day in the life
People are great! I was out all day shopping today and was struck by how happy, kind, and friendly everybody I crossed paths with was.
Maybe it’s because of the holiday season, but seeing all the happy shiny faces smiling and laughing gave me a boost of energy.
It stoked and maintained my optimistic faith in humanity.
We all want the same things after all, and emotional contentment and psychological security are important to all of us in everyday life.
It should really be second nature to recognize our similarities instead of dwelling on any perceived differences. Live life to the fullest.
We all want to be happy and enjoy our lives, and everything is so much better when we just relax and let ourselves fully participate in the common practices, rituals, and protocols of life in America today.
This is not rocket science, just a recognition of the commitment to shared assumptions, aspirations, and acceptance of all the little quirks, habits, and beliefs we all share with every other person.
I noticed how everybody participated in the unwritten rules of politeness when out shopping.
People parked in the spaces available to them and smiled at each other as they got in or out of their cars and entered or departed the stores.
They had their minds made up and were determined to be pleasant.
There was none of the crazed frenzy of Black Friday with people pushing and shoving to get the best bargain that I had heard about on the news.
People today were just relaxed and going on about their business. I rubbed shoulders with hundreds of people and exchanged smiles, and small talk, and thoroughly enjoyed the synchronicity of it all.
One of the stores had a broken elevator to the rooftop parking lot. We all had to walk up and down the stairs, sharing the narrow space of the stairwell and politely motioning people laden with packages or bags to take precedence on the narrow steps.
There were the inevitable delays inside the stores, but nobody mean- mugged the workers or complained about the lack of some item that was already sold out. C’est la vie. Such is life.
The aisles were packed, crowded even but nobody complained or tried to shove their way to the front of any lines.
One lady asked me for help as I passed her in the aisle by reaching up and procuring an item high atop a shelf that she couldn’t reach.
I did it gladly because I could, and we exchanged smiles and went on about our way. Simple kindness, good vibes, and a pleasant interval for both of us. It was no big deal, just common courtesy.
We should never take things for granted.
Helping other people when they ask for small favors or acting on impulse can be a very rewarding, very pleasant interaction.
Like letting somebody with a small item cut in front of me when I have a full cart always makes me happy. It is just another moment in time.
Life is a series of small moments in time like this. We all need to realize this and act accordingly. Life is short. Try to enjoy it.
I always exchange pleasantries with the store personnel as well. Why take out any of our frustrations on them? They are there to help. Let them.
When I got home, I had the time to relax and reflect on my day out in the world. Mixing and matching, mingling and sharing, noticing and caring.
It was a very good day. I hope yours was too.
Life is short. Time is precious. Enjoy it all. We are all connected…
