People are Blind to the Effects of Social Media

Social media has become a great tool today for developing skills, acquiring information, and building a career. I think, it all spans from the fact that people can speak their minds without any sort of physical judgment.

A major role social media is acting as is a channel for creating awareness for start-ups and new business owners are taking advantage of this. Even well know companies have evolved and are jumping on the social media bandwagon.

The world will keep evolving and to stay relevant you’ll need to move with the trend.

One thing is that young people especially Gen Z kids are honing these social media applications and are making real money from them. One of my favorite aspect is that, they have become major marketing spaces and new marketing strategies are springing up daily.

Instagram for example; is a visual app that gives the idea that you can post whatever pictures you want the world to see, it makes you develop your photography skills because people love quality pictures.

Meanwhile, Twitter is great for sharing ideas, information and having intellectual conversations. Also for teaching and learning.

During the pandemic, we have had more apps become more popular, like TikTok and Clubhouse. They have been fun and there’s a possibility of more applications flooding app stores.

It is practically impossible to deny or downplay the great help social media has been, in terms of business, fitness, work, and even our personal lives. And how much it has made life a lot easier. One of the things I love most about these apps is the easy access to information, major life lessons, and hacks you never thought you needed.

Just the other day, I stumbled on a thread on Twitter that gave major fitness advice especially for women on their period. I never even knew I needed that information and it has helped me greatly since then.

But you know how they say everything has its downside, well this one does too.

Just like I stumbled on a fitness tip, I have also seen people involved in bullying and targeted harassment. Negative and hurtful words have been said to people. It got so bad, the person being harassed had to deactivate their account.

I know people hurt people but the internet gives people power, it emboldens them. People can go ahead and say things they would never say to you in person, because they are typing with their keypads and probably in another continent.

Because of the influence that is found on these apps, it has as much tendency to have a negative effect as the positive effect. There’s a general rule I believe that says “whatever you are exposed to long enough begins to change your heart”.

Most times, it doesn’t happen overnight but it is subtle and 90% of the time, you don’t even realize it.

And it’s obvious in the little things like how people start to change their point of view not necessarily because they’ve been exposed to the right information but because they have been exposed to the wrong information long enough.

This now becomes very obvious because young people especially start to have unrealistic standards. After all, social media doesn’t always show the full picture.

The average adult spends at most 7 hours on their phone daily. This is a lot of time to be exposed to a lot of information and even be overwhelmed with information.

And this majorly affects young people because they are at the age where they can be influenced. It also starts to affects how they see themselves, their self-esteem, and standards.

Even though young people fall into this ‘social-media bubble’ more often, doesn’t mean adults are left out because nobody is above influence.

I have realized that we are all a product of influence and it is either we realize it sooner in life or later. But the earlier we realize this, the better for us. Because we are then able to select the things we want around us, which eventually determines how we are influenced.
