Pelicans
Pre-Flight Check
All along the wet foggy beach pre-flight pelicans checking them twice
Word has gone out to one and all: take-off soon. A hundred pelicans, more perhaps. All checking their pre-flight lists, twice.
They don’t visit us too often, but when they visit, they visit in numbers.
I think they view my little town as a roadside café, or a freeway rest area. A couple of days in the spring we’ll catch them heading north for wherever they’re going, and in the fall, we catch them heading in the other direction, for wherever they’re going. I don’t know what their destinations are only that we’re not an endpoint, as it were, just a pit-stop.
And so, everyone is ready, all the boxes checked. Then this carpet of birds begins to rise, a ripple of takeoffs — They do not ascend elegantly, but, dear me, once they’re in the air, what fliers they are.
I wish some of them would make my town their home. Seeing them always lifts my heart, and it would be nice to have it be lifted every day.
