Participation Trophy
What's your take?
When I was a kid I believe I may have had a total of 3 trophies. One was for perfect attendance in the 4th grade. One was for crossing from Brownies to Juniors in the girl scouts. The last was winning 3rd place in a small town contest. It was for Little Miss Dallas West Virginia.
I was not that kid that was good at a lot of stuff so those trophies really validated me.
I don't remember where I read it, it was that past back, but this man felt that giving kids participation trophies were wrong. That they should have to earn recognition. He also stated that giving trophies for merely showing up was making powder puffs out of kids.
Its instills entitlement. It diminishes the accomplishments of the kids who put forth the effort to win.
Ok, I think he could have been slightly less harsh, but the man has a valid point.
Giving participation trophies is a nice idea in theory, but, I am not sure it serves a purpose. I think it is great they want all kids to have a sense of worth. That's great, give them a paper certificate then.
To receive a trophy though? yeah, I don't think that is right.
Kids have to learn early on in life that hard work pays off.
Putting work and pride in yourself pays off. It is great if you show up but if someone works on something harder than you they deserve the recognition for it.
Do you want a trophy too?
Ok, then work hard. practice do whatever you have to do to earn it.
Getting rewarded then will hold more value and worth to you. You will know you truly earned it.!
