The Third Week
PART 3: JULY SKETCH POEM SONG CHALLENGE

Someone elbowed my arm as I was falling asleep,
“I thought I’d wake you before the sleep got too deep,”
I wasn’t sleeping, just playing my part,
“It looks like the circus is about to start.”

The high trapeze wire is for devils it seems,
While all of the rest, are glued to their screens,
But without a selfie, was I really there?
Inside the circus, no one really cares.

I left in a hurry, didn’t stay ‘til the end,
and hitched up my cart, my back it did bend,
While the circus it followed me into the street,
Performing their tricks on endless repeat.

I changed to a bird, hoping to fly away,
The acrobats said that they were here to stay,
Flying might give you a temporary escape,
But it all comes around, like the loop of a tape.

And then we’re back, in the city it seems,
Grey is the colour replacing our dreams,
And black is the night when the souls are alone,
On the forty fifth floor, who can call this place home?

I could dress up in costume, be someone else,
Though I imagine, that wouldn’t help,
The acrobats circle to show their new trick,
Trying to convince me, that it’s me that is sick.

So I sing out the ones that got inside,
And stay with the ones, along for the ride,
And though they offer me a magical gift,
I see they’ve just left “r”, out of their grift.
