Summary

The poem "Parents’ Love for a Mobile Phone" reflects on the modern phenomenon of parents prioritizing their mobile phones over spending quality time with their children.

Abstract

"Parents’ Love for a Mobile Phone" is a free verse poem that poignantly addresses the issue of parental neglect in the digital age. It depicts children who find joy and companionship with their grandparents, while their parents are preoccupied with social media, games, and other mobile phone distractions. The poem laments the emotional disconnect in homes, parks, and public spaces, attributing this neglect to a generation of parents who have regressed in their emotional development due to an obsession with technology. The author expresses a deep sadness over this trend, which they view as a step backward in human connection and parenting. The poem concludes with a nod to the power of writing and poetry to articulate these concerns, acknowledging the support received from the Medium platform and its community.

Opinions

  • The poet suggests that mobile phones have become a priority for parents over their own children, leading to a form of emotional neglect.
  • The happiness of children is seen as an inconvenience when it competes with the parents' engagement with their devices.
  • The poem criticizes the irony of the so-called "techno-unlogical" parents who are moving forward with technology but backward in their emotional and familial connections.
  • There is a sense of nostalgia and longing for a time when parental attention was focused on children rather than on digital distractions.
  • The author expresses gratitude towards the Medium community for providing a platform for their voice and concerns to be heard.

I see and I hear the happy child, Playing, laughing out loud, Having a wonderful time, Always having a wonderful time, With their grandparents’, Not with their parents’, Their parents’ prefer to Play with their mobile phone’s.

The happiness of the child Ignored as if some kind of Inconvenience. Social media and addictive games, Electronic binary systems Have now taken priority over the Parents’ own flesh and blood.

This is a real living breathing Emotional sadness.

In the home, in parks, Playground’s and on beaches, Spawned from the heartless Generation of moving forwards To go backwards in the Ever-increasing Undeveloped techno-unlogical Parent hive minds.
