I got this error while adding a parameter to a template:

An error occurred (ValidationError) when calling the CreateChangeSet operation: [/Parameters/SubnetCountParam] ‘null’ values are not allowed in templates

Since I had just added a parameter, I presumed I was not setting the value correctly but I couldn’t find what I was missing. Finally I looked at the CloudFormation template and realized it looked like this:

Null was not referring to the value I was passing in, but rather the fact that the type was missing for the parameter. It seems quite obvious that this error message would be better if it said:

“Parameter SubnetCountParam is missing Type”
