Pandemic-Proof Pupper

poetry prompt: strange pandemic/ physical distancing stories

Photo by Ryan Stone on Unsplash

It was our first walk post the pandemic & lockdown.

I was armed with my mask, gloves, and a sanitizer in my pocket.

Also wariness and fear of contagion in my mind.

My dog, Toffee, however, was super-duper excited. Once outside, he decided to take charge! He gleefully, and with determination, tugged me to the park.

But, the park was occupied!

Someone walking his retriever. We sheepishly nodded at each other — while I mentally tried to gauge if we were at least six feet apart.

But the dogs had made up their minds! They yanked on their leashes till they were frolicking in the grass. We humans at the other end of the leash smiled and started a conversation…

Now, every evening, I ‘gear up’ and dutifully go for a walk with Toffee. I think he realizes that I need to go out, enjoy nature, and socialize (safely).

Namaste! I’m Radhika. This short piece is inspired by my cocker-spaniel, Toffee. The photo is a stock image — however, I’m sure you’ll agree that all dogs are cute. Toffee hated being stuck at home in the initial days of the lockdown. And I honestly believe that he realized that I needed the outdoors too.

The pandemic has been (and still is) tough. However…
