Pain Sucks, So I Decided To Buy and Try This New Massager For My Partner
Talk about positive vibrations (probably not the kind you’re thinking)
When some people think of massagers, they think of the kind that are considered “toys for adults”.
However, I’m talking about what is now being called a “massage gun”- probably to help steer people away from that stigma.
For some reason unbeknownst to me, this photo keeps rotating to a different position than the original. Photo by KL Simmons
The massage gun that you see me holding in the above photo was actually a Christmas present for my partner.
It still is, but it has turned out to be an absolutely wonderful gift for me as well, thus the reason I took a picture like I was going to kiss it.
My upper back, neck and shoulders seem to always be sore or in pain. Photo by KL Simmons
My partner and I massage each other on a regular basis, not just because it feels amazing, but because we both tend to be in some kind of pain or feel sore for some reason some where.
Even though I was a licensed, professional massage therapist for over a decade at few fantastic spas in and around Philadelphia, my fingers and hands still get tired after massaging for a while.
And when my partner or I are in pain, I don’t want to stop because my fingers and hands can’t keep up with our demand.
That’s why I decided to finally try out a massage gun after seeing ads or talks about it on various media outlets over the past 2 years.
When my partner opened my gift, he told me that he considered buying one and almost did.
I’m glad that he didn’t because it was nice to get the credit for bringing this wonderful tool into our home.
And, he had already spoiled my first choice of a Christmas gift by seeing and ordering a terrific set of knives (he loves to cook) during Black Friday week.
Now that we’re both doing a SHIT TON OF WORK (so much to clean, buy and set up) as we’re settling into our new place after moving from our last one, we need this thing more than ever!
I’ve already used it 3–4 times today to help with a bad headache from upper back, neck and shoulder tension after doing detailed work on our kitchen all day yesterday (thanks to the fuckers who didn’t bother to clean like they were supposed to before vacating).
My partner loves it when I use the massage gun on his legs and feet.
You don’t have to apply much pressure and the battery lasts 3–4 hours per charge.
I don’t know how long this one will last, but I don’t care. At this point, I’m curious to try others because I’m so satisfied with this one, I’d like to see what more advanced models are like.
The one I bought costed less than $100, but there are some that cost almost $500!? I wouldn’t pay that much. However, if the higher end models deliver even better results, I’m game to test them out.
Here’s what some experts have to say about them:
Wu says to find a device that is actually comfortable to hold. “Ergonomic design so that when you hold it, your arm doesn’t fatigue,” she says. “Weight of the massage gun is important so that you can again hold it against or to an area without straining your other arm.” She also recommends finding one that has multiple attachments so you can use it on different muscle groups all across your body.
Zerio points out that speed and noise are some big factors to watch out for. “Common specs to pay attention to are the variety of percussion heads provided with the product, the noise level (some of them can sound like a jackhammer) and the number of speed options,” he says. “More expensive massage guns have up to five speed options, which isn’t really necessary, when two to three is all you really need.”
There’s no replacement for the warm and specific touches of fingers and hands for massage work, but these massage guns, are the next best thing for similar outcomes.
