“OW!! OW!!!! OW!!!!”, I screamed, (it bloody hurt — A lot)!

Careful who’s advice you listen to!

When I was 9 years old, my younger brother, who was 3 years old at the time was playing in the lounge and had his dressing gown on.

We had an open coal fire in those days and my Mum and Dad were always careful to ensure that the fire guard was in front of the fire at all times.

However, my little brother has always been an inquisitive little bugger (still is) and on this particular day he managed to somehow move the fire guard and got too close to the open fire.

His dressing gown was made of like a nylon material (these were the days before fire retardant rules for clothing) and as I turned around I noticed that flames were licking up the side of it and this black molten lava stuff was melting and dripping to the floor.

My little nine year old brain couldn’t think of anything else to do, but my little brother was screaming and so I dashed over and put out the flames with my hand (I know. Stupid. But hey, I was only 9).

Thankfully there was not a mark on my brother as my Mum came dashing in from the kitchen, but it was a different story for me.

My thumb and forefinger on my right hand were totally black and had the molten lava (molten, melted nylon) stuck to the burned area.

Well, I was screaming in pain and my Mum went into a right tizzy. She called the neighbor to come and baby sit for my other brother while she took me to hospital.

The neighbor took one look at my hand and advised my Mum to put some cream on the burn right away.

Now, even though I was only nine years old, I had learned in the cub scouts that you should never put cream on a burn. I told my Mum this but she listened to the advice of our neighbor instead and slopped a shitload of some kind of antiseptic cream on my burned hand.

“OW!! OW!!!! OW!!!!”, I screamed, (it bloody hurt — A lot)!

Anyway, in the emergency room of the hospital, the doctor went bloody mad and asked who had been daft enough to slop cream on my burned hand. My Mum sheepishly admitted it was her, but also told him that our neighbor had advised her that it was the right thing to do.

WRONG!

Because of this totally wrong (but well meant) advice, I had to endure twenty minutes of agony as the doc scraped away cream and by now dried hard molten nylon, and this took some skin with it.

Anyway, it was a nasty burn but would have healed a heck of a lot quicker if the cream hadn’t buggered things up even more!

And the moral of this little tale I’m sharing with you today?

It’s this…

Sometimes, even the most well intended advice can steer you in totally the wrong direction and screw you up badly and unnecessarily if that advice comes from someone who doesn’t know what the heck they are talking about!

So if you are sitting there wondering why still to this day you have yet to hit even your first, say $1k a month, income from your online efforts, perhaps it’s because you’ve been listening to the wrong advice?

Just sayin’ :-)
